Box Score
Billings, MT - The Simon Fraser University Clan women's basketball team lost their first game of 2014 81-63 on the road to the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets
Thursday evening.
SFU was able to take a 7-5 lead early in the game, but the Yellowjackets would go on a 10-0 run to take a 15-7 lead almost midway through the first half.
"We had some good defensive sections where we did everything we wanted to do, and then we would give them second and third chances for easy put backs," said Head Coach
Bruce Langford.
The Clan would battle back as junior
Erin Chambers (Mission, BC) would make two three-pointers to spark the team and cut the deficit to just two, 17-15.
Minutes later and Chambers would make another three to give the Clan the lead 20-19. Chambers finished with a team high 17 points, but faced foul trouble for much of the game, ultimately fouling out late in the second half.
"We were a little more patient on offence, we made sure we were getting our shot," Langford explained on the Clan being able to comeback early on. "When we move the ball and spot up quite well, we make those shots."
The Clan would keep it close for much of the first half as the score was tied 29-29 with around five minutes to go in the opening twenty minutes.
Following the
Rebecca Langmead (Torbay, NL) put back to tie the game, Montana State Billings would go on a 9-0 run to take a 38-29 lead, before finishing the half with a 43-33 lead.
Langmead finished with nine points and a team high seven rebounds.
Coming out of the break, the Clan were able claw their way back.
Junior
Katie Lowen (Lethbridge, AB) started it off with one of her three, three-pointers of the night. Then senior
Chelsea Reist (Mission, BC) made a mid-range jumper to get the deficit under ten.
Chambers then made another three to bring the score to 51-46 MSUB just under seven minutes into the second half.
That would be as close as SFU would get as the Yellowjackets would eventually pull away, leading to the 18 point victory.
Reist ended the game with 12 points and six rebounds, while Lowen finished with 11 points and three assists.
Langmead and
Kia Van Laare (New Westminster, BC) tied for the team lead in steals with three each.
The loss drops the Clan's record to 7-3 on the season and 1-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
The Clan will be back in action
Saturday against ninth ranked Seattle Pacific in Seattle, WA at 7:00 p.m.
