Clan look for second win of 2014

SFU returns home hosting SDSMT Saturday afternoon

10/17/2014 4:06:00 PM

The Simon Fraser University Clan football team returns home after four straight weekends on the road, as they take on the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers Saturday afternoon.

SFU gets back into Great Northwest Athletic Conference play, after playing Division I Idaho State in non-conference action last weekend.

In their last conference game SFU earned a 29-19 victory over Dixie State, improving their conference record at 1-1 two weeks ago.

Saturday, the team will attemp to move above .500 as they begin the second half of the season.

Ryan Stanford (Phoenix, AZ) will start this weekend after throwing for 190 yards and two touchdowns (one rushing) against the Bengals last Saturday, in just over a quarter of the game.

He will look to his deep receiving core as the Hardrockers come in with the worst pass defence in the conference, having allowed an average of 351 yards per-game through the air.

With Kyle Kawamoto (North Vancouver, BC) nursing a foot injury, Justin Buren (Coquitlam, BC) was inserted into the lineup last weekend and exploded with a five reception, 92 yard and a touchdown performance against ISU.

This weekend he will look to repeat that success, as will Lemar Durant (Coquitlam, BC), Bobby Pospischil (Coquitlam, BC) and Jamal Kett (Orangeville, ON). All four have touchdown receptions on the season.

On defence, the Clan will have to focus their attention on quarterback Trent McKinney who averages 224 passing yards per-game, and 77 yards rushing per-game. McKinney's 302 total yards of offence per-game ranks first in the GNAC.

Chris Tolbert (Silver Springs, MD) will look to make his first start on defence having moved from running back to cornerback following a shoulder injury. In his defensive debut last week, Tolbert finished with seven tackles.

Game time Saturday will be at 1:00 p.m. and for ticket information please email tickets@sfu.ca. Student admission is free and there is a free shuttle from the Burnaby campus to Swangard Stadium.
