Box Score Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University volleyball team upset No 18 Central Washington Saturday shutting the visitors out 3-0.
The Clan won the first two sets handily 25-16 and 25-18, before the Wildcats forced set three to 30-28.
"We had a great game Thursday night against NNU and although we didn't win it really pushed us towards a strong effort tonight," said middle blocker
Amanda Renkema (Delta, BC). "We have been working on learning to win and really fought for it in that third set and came out on top."
SFU opened strong against their nationally ranked opponents, taking an early lead 12-7 in the first set.
From there, blocks from
Madeline Hait (Burnaby, BC) and
Mackenzie Dunham (Lloydminster, AB) lifted the team over the Wildcats, improving to 20-10.
CWU would add several more points to their efforts, but were unable to catch SFU's early lead as the home team would take the set 25-16.
In the second, another fast lead would propel the Clan through the bulk of the game, as they would take an 11-3 lead following a slew of serves by
Alison McKay (Port Moody, BC).
The Wildcats would try to find a way back into the game but SFU kept pressing, taking the set 25-18.
After the 10-minute intermission the visitors returned much more cohesive, this time getting the jump on the Clan.
The Wildcats would lead 14-7 midway through, and 21-17 several plays later.
SFU dug deep however, coming back from a 24-21 deficit and turning away four set-points from CWU.
At the 25-25 mark the SFU would take advantage but Central would continue to tie it up until the 28-28 mark where a Hait-Dunham block would give SFU their final advantage, and Hait would put home the 30-28 kill one play later.
SFU would take the match 3-0, improving to 10-5 on the season and 4-3 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
Devon May and
Kelsey Robinson (Surrey, BC) would have 14 kills each, while Renkema would add 10 and factor-in on six blocks. Hait would assist with five blocks as well.
The Clan are back in action on Thursday October 9 when they take on Saint Martin's.
The game begins at 7:00 p.m. in Lacey, WA.
