Fairbanks, AK – In the final game of the 2014 volleyball season, seniors
Brooklynn Gould-Bradbury,
Madeline Hait,
Kelsey Robinson and
Amanda Renkema capped off their careers with a 3-0 sweep over Alaska Fairbanks Saturday night, and finalized the team's first winning season since joining the NCAA.
"I'm very proud of our team and the things they have accomplished this season," said head coach
Gina Schmidt. "Our progress is a direct result of the effort, attitude and teamwork the girls bring to the gym every day."
The Clan end their 2014 campaign 17-9 overall and 11-7 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, the program's first winning record and best season since 2010, after showing steady improvement in 2013, Schmidt's first year as head coach. They also finish fifth in the GNAC standings, two places ahead of 2013's seventh place finish.
The 3-0 victory (25-23, 27-25, 25-23) over the Nanooks did not come without a battle as each of the three sets was decided by the minimum two-point margin, the Clan fighting until the very end to send their seniors off with a win.
Devon May (Robert's Creek, BC) led the Clan with 19 kills on the night, while Robinson added 12 kills and 12 digs and Hait and Renkema each recorded eight kills in their final game.
Gould-Bradbury had 25 assists while
Danielle Curtis added 19, and
Alison McKay recorded 14 digs.
All three sets featured a comeback by the Clan, as the team, rallied together one final time with each of the three seniors showed excellent form in their final appearances with the Clan, a game which also marked the departure of Simon Fraser's first NCAA recruiting class from 2010.
"Our four seniors have made a huge impact during my two seasons here," Schmidt continued. "We will miss their contributions and leadership next year, but they have helped pave the way for a bright future for our program."
Brooklynn Gould Bradbury, a native of Lake Tapps, Washington joined the Clan two seasons ago, transferring from North Idaho College to supplement the Clan's setters. Brooklynn has been a co-captain of the Clan since arriving at SFU in 2013 and finishes the season ninth in the GNAC in assists this season averaging 7.03 assists per set. Brooklynn is one of only two Clan women to appear in every one of SFU's 95 sets this season, started in all of the Clan's 26 matches in 2014 and was instrumental in helping SFU garner their first GNAC Team of the Week honor. In 2013, she was named the Clan's Most Inspirational Player thanks to her dedication and selflessness on the court. Brooklynn is a Communications major and while she plans to return to the USA following her graduation she admits that being the only American on a Canadian team has been a fun and challenging experience. Brooklynn plans to remain active in volleyball following her collegiate career and may assist with the Clan team as she completes her degree.
Madeline Hait, who hails from Burnaby, was a member of the Clan's inaugural NCAA recruiting class, joining SFU in 2010 and playing four seasons with the program. Always a strong presence at the net, the middle blocker has stepped into-her-own the past two seasons, leading the team in blocks. This season she ranked second in the GNAC in blocks, averaging 1.17 per game. She finishes her senior season with 162 kills and a six place GNAC ranking with a .291 hitting percentage. Madeline is a three-time GNAC Academic all-conference honouree and boasts a GPA of 3.66 in Business Administration. In 2013 Madeline was named an honourable mention in the GNAC all-conference team and in 2014 she earned the Clan's first-ever GNAC Defensive Player of the Week award following an incredible performance with 13 blocks against MSUB and SPU. After graduation, Madeline has plans to attend law school, and says she will never completely be able to give up her love of volleyball.
Kelsey Robinson, a native of Surrey, is also a member of the inaugural NCAA recruiting class, and has been a force on the Clan team the past two years after sitting out the 2012 season with a knee injury. Her ability to bounce back and her passion for the game has not gone unnoticed, and has led to this year being her best ever season as she leads the team in kills and finishing sixth in the GNAC with 304 kills on the season, one of only six players to break 300-kills this season. Kelsey, one of the team's co-captains for the past two seasons, is a three-time GNAC Academic all-conference honouree and boasts a 3.87 GPA in Biology. She will be applying to medical school following graduation as she pursues a career as a doctor. In 2013-14 she had the second-highest GPA among all Clan athletes. Last year Kelsey earned GNAC all-conference honourable mention recognition, as her and Madeline became the first Clan volleyball players to earn the honour. Kelsey, who has coached in the community throughout her time on the team plans to remain involved with coaching and playing volleyball following her graduation.
Amanda Renkema, who hails from Ladner, was the final member the inaugural NCAA recruiting class of 2010, and has served as co-captain of the team for the past three seasons. At middle blocker Amanda finishes her final season with 70 blocks and 205 kills this season, leading her team to their best season in the GNAC since joining the NCAA. Amanda ranks 18
th in the conference in kills, 16
th in blocks and seventh overall in hitting percentage. This season she helped lead the team to their first GNAC Team of the Week honours. Amanda has appeared in 110 matches and 312 sets in her career, starting in 108 of those 110 games. This fall is her final semester and while she is unsure of her path following graduation she is excited to pursue new opportunities and will continue playing volleyball recreationally.
