Belmont, CA – Red-shirt sophomore
Hidde Vos (Barendrecht, Netherlands) came off the bench to hit six three-point shots but it wasn't enough as Simon Fraser University Clan lost 123-116 to Notre Dame de Namur at the Notre Dame de Namur
Thanksgiving Classic Saturday in Belmont, CA.
Trailing by nine points with just over two minutes to play, junior
Michael Harper and Vos connected on back-to-back threes to pull the Clan to within, 114-111, with 1:57 left in the game. After the Argonauts made a pair of free throws, Vos hit another three-pointer to cut the margin to two, 116-114, with 1:35 to play.
That's as close as the Clan would get as senior guard
Sango Niang (Paris, France) and Harper both missed three-pointers in the final minute and the Argonauts pushed the lead back out to seven.
Simon Fraser University, which scored more than 100 points for the sixth time in seven games, saw its overall record drop to 4-3. NDNU won for the first time this season.
"Our senior's cooled off after last night's win over Holy Names but the bench stepped up for us," said Clan head coach
James Blake. "Unfortunately we couldn't capitalize on really great efforts from Vos and Rod (Evans-Taylor) tonight."
Roderick Evans-Taylor scored a team-high 25-points on 10-of-16 shooting and pulled down a team-high six rebounds while Vos scored all of his 18-points on 6-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc in 25 minutes off the bench. He was 4-of-7 in the second half.
The Clan launched more than half of its shots from beyond the three-point line, but connected on just 6-of-21 three pointers in the second half. The team was 17-of-48 from beyond the arc and shot 48.8 percent from the field.
Simon Fraser was out-rebounded 52-30 and turned the ball over 29 times.
"Turnover really surprised me," continued Blake. "We didn't show great leadership or poise handling the ball and our 19 steals went to waste because we just threw the ball away as quickly as we stole it."
SFU led 61-58 at halftime and the teams were tied 82-82 with 11:09 to play. The Argos then went on a 13-4 run over a three minute span for a 95-86 lead with 8:49 left. SFU's comeback fell short in the final minute.
Niang, who averages 22.6 points per game, scored just 15 points on 4-of-18 shooting, including 1-for-11 from three-point range.
Forward Don Washington score 30 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Argonauts. Four other players also scored in double figures for NDNU, including Jalen Young and Jamaal Davis with 22 and 21 points, respectively.
SFU opens its Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule this Saturday, Dec. 6 at home against Western Washington University. Tip-off is 7:30 PM in the West Gym. The Clan will honour the memory of Canadian hero Terry Fox by raising a banner displaying his name and No. 4 that he wore as a student-athlete on the Clan junior varsity men's basketball team to the West Gym rafters in a pre-game ceremony.
During the ceremony Terry's original jersey will be presented to the Fox Family, represented by Terry's brother, Fred Fox.
