Clan Romps Over WSC 86-42

Senior guard Katie Lowen knocked down six three-point shots and scored a team-high 18 points in win.

Grand Junction, COL. – Senior guard Katie Lowen knocked down six three-point shots and scored a team-high 18 points as Simon Fraser University rolled past Western State Colorado Mountaineers, 86-42, in a non-conference women's basketball game on Saturday, Nov. 29, at the Holiday Inn Airport Thanksgiving Classic in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Simon Fraser rebounded after its second loss to a nationally ranked opponent on Friday, losing 84-76 to No. 16 ranked Colorado Mesa, by rolling over Western State Colorado.  Simon Fraser was never challenged against the Mountaineers, holding them to just six points in the game's first 10 minutes, before going on a 19-2 run over the next six minute to seal the victory.

The Clan built a 31-point halftime lead, 45-14, by holding the Mountaineers to 17 percent shooting in the first half. The margin grew as large as 54-points with 4:37 to go in the game.

"We were able to get a lot of players into the game and get them some valuable experience," said Clan head coach Bruce Langford. "I thought collectively we had better energy than Friday and we play hard. Western State had two very good offensive players and we were able to control them reasonably well."

SFU senior forward Erin Chambers (Mission, BC), who averages a conference-leading 30.8 points per game, added 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting in 26 minutes. That was the most minutes played by any player on the Clan.

All 12 players who dressed for SFU scored, except for freshman Perrine Fuchs (Wissembourg, France), who missed on her only shot attempt, a three-pointer.

In addition to Lowen (Lethbridge, AB) and Chambers, freshman forward Rachel Fradgley (London, ON) scored eight points, junior forward Meg Wilson (London, ON) had eight points and a team-high six rebounds and freshman forward Samantha Beauchamp (Surrey, BC) scored eight points on 4-of-5 shooting off the bench. Sophomore Ellen Kett had eight assists.

Simon Fraser improved to 4-2. Western State Colorado falls to 2-2.

SFU opens its Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule this Saturday, Dec. 6 at home against Western Washington University. Tip-off is 5:15 PM in the West Gym. The Clan will honour the memory of Canadian hero Terry Fox by raising a banner displaying his name and No. 4 that he wore as a student-athlete on the Clan junior varsity men's basketball team to the West Gym rafters. The banner-raising ceremony will take place prior to tip-off of the men's game against WWU that begins at 7:30 PM.

During the ceremony Terry's original jersey will be presented to the Fox Family, represented by Terry's brother, Fred Fox.
