Box Score Irvine, CA – The Simon Fraser University men's basketball team continued to show offensive fire in their second and final game of the exhibition season, falling 128-92 against Division I University of California –Irvine.
The Clan outscored the Anteaters, who are the projected Big West champions for the 2014-15 season, in the second period, but a slow first have ultimately held them back against the home team.
"We had difficulty trapping the ball in the first half, and had to adjust to their play and their attack," said head coach
James Blake. "In the first half we didn't put out a great performance but I was happy with the way the team adjusted and refocused in the second half."
In similar fashion to their last game, Simon Fraser's
Sango Niang (Paris, France),
Justin Cole (Los Angeles, CA) and
Roderick Evans-Taylor were the Clan's leaders on the score sheet, recording 52 of the teams 92 points.
Niang led all players with 19 points, while also earning four assists and one steal following up a 27-point performance from last weekend with another game-leading night.
Evans-Taylor earned Simon Fraser's first double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds on the night while team captain Cole had 16 points and one steal.
The Anteaters took an early 14-3 lead and continued to dominate in the first period, scoring 19 unanswered points to lead 40-12 by the midway point of the half.
Simon Fraser broke the stalemate as a
Patrick Simon jumper gave them the go ahead basket, propelling a slow comeback and recording a 71-33 score at the half.
In the second half the Clan took an early seven-point run to continue building off their momentum from the end of the first period, pushing the score to 85-49 by the first media timeout.
Simon Fraser's pressing defence poured it on in the final ten-minutes of the game as the team pushed near to the 100-point mark, and outscoring the home side 59-57 in the second period.
"We love to go to the rim and to the free throw line, which we were able to do much more often in the second half," Blake continued. "We forced many more turnovers in the second half, which let us play to our strengths."
The Clan scored 12 points off turnovers and 12 second chance points in the second half, as well as 23 points off the bench, as 11 SFU players recorded points.
"We can definitely grow from this performance," Blake finished. "We are excited to come home and open our non-conference season next week."
The Clan open the non-conference schedule with a double-header November 14 and 15, as they host Northwest Indian College in Burnaby's West Gym.
Tip-off for both games will be at 4:00 p.m. and admission is free for SFU students.
