Clan open home conference schedule

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Burnaby, BC - The Simon Fraser University softball team started the home portion of their conference schedule at Beedie Field with a pair of losses, 5-0 and 11-0, to the Western Oregon Wolves on Friday night.

"I think we had more takeaways from the first game than the second game, the second game we were completely flat," said Head Coach Mike Renney. "We did something that is a cardinal sin and that's give up. We're talking about that right now. You can't give up. You have to fight, you have to scratch, you have to claw and close the gap any way you can."

Jessica Goulet (Cambridge, ON) got the start in the first game and went four and a third innings allowing five runs while Jessica Fortier (Three Hills, AB) went two and two thirds allowing a run on two hits.

Freshman Stefanie Sheard (Winnipeg, MB) and Kendra Goodman (Surrey, BC) had multi-hit games, going three for three and two for three respectively in the game while Rachel Proctor (Surrey, BC) and Alex Baylak (Regina, SK) had the other two Clan hits.

Western Oregon jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, adding single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

Goulet and Fortier were the pitching tandem for the Clan again in game two as Goulet went three innings allowing 11 runs on 11 hits, 10 of which were earned and Fortier went two innings allowing three hits.

Robyn Mogavero (Whitby, ON) went two for three, the only member of the Clan to record more than one hit.

Kaitlyn Cameron (Langley, BC) and Sheard had the other two hits for the Clan.

Both teams advanced runners into scoring position in the first inning but neither side was able to push a run across.

Western Oregon did all their scoring in the second, with six runs, and the third with five runs before

"We gave a good team too much latitude in the second game and they took full advantage of it. We were in the first game and the second game we were out of it. Full credit to them, they swung the bat and they shut us down. We've got a lot of areas we need to improve on so we need to break it down to the minutia and go back to the fundamentals. We need to look at fundamentals and make sure we're looking at them before we look at doing anything fancy," continued Renney.

The Clan will continue their home schedule on Sunday when they host the defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference Champions, the Saint Martin's Saints.

"Hopefully in time the efforts that are being put in will be worthwhile because the results will come. It's going to be after getting your hat handed to you a few times though. We play a tough team again on Sunday. I think we're ready for practice exams but not ready for our finals yet so we'll just have to take it as it comes," finished Renney.
