Lacey, WA - The Simon Fraser University Clan softball team lost to the defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference Champion Saint Martin's Saints on Saturday 8-0 and 6-3 as SFU began their final road trip of the season.

Mackenzie Bender (St. Albert, AB) pitched all five innings in game one, a game that was shortened by the mercy rule.

Bender, a sophomore, allowed eight runs on nine hits but only three of them were earned.

Offensively, the Clan were limited to two base runners by Saints ace Sam Munder, coming from a walk and a Stefanie Sheard (Winnipeg, MB) single in the first inning.

"The first game was disappointing," said Head Coach Mike Renney. "As much as it's understandable considering the season we've had it's still not something that's acceptable."

"More was asked in the second game. We got down but then we rallied as a team and put some runs on the board to give our pitcher the support that we didn't provide in the first game," continued Renney.

Jessica Fortier (Three Hills, AB) started game two for SFU and allowed six runs on seven hits.

Nicole Ratel (Langley, BC) went three for three while Rachel Proctor (Surrey, BC) went two for three with a run scored and a run batted in.

SMU jumped out to a 6-0 lead with three runs in the second and three in the fourth before SFU started to mount a comeback.

The Clan got on the board in the fifth inning when Proctor doubled to left field and scored on an Alex Baylak (Regina, SK) single.

In the sixth, two more runs cross for SFU in a rally that was started with a single from Sheard.

Sheard advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Robyn Mogavero (Whitby, ON) single.

Mogavero advanced to second on the throw home when Sheard scored and scored herself on a Proctor double to cut the deficit in half.

The tying run reached the on deck circle in the seventh but SMU retired the Clan with a double play to end the game.

"It was good to rebound in the second game but it's still not up to the standard that we expect in this program and the past success we've had has certainly not been reflected. That will be our goal next year with a more seasoned team that's certainly been battle tested. We'll be tested again tomorrow when we close out our season against one of the top teams in our conference," finished Renney.

SFU will close out the 2014 season on Sunday against the Western Oregon Wolves in a double header beginning at 1:00 p.m.
