Robinson leads Clan to victory over AAU, earns tournament All-star nod

Box Score San Rafael, CA - The Simon Fraser University volleyball team capped off their appearance at the GNAC/PacWest tournament with a victory over the Academy of Art Urban Knigts, led by senior Kelsey Robinson who was named a tournament all-star.

The Clan won their final match of the weekend 3-0, making their tournament record 2-2.

Robinson led the Clan over the Knights with 13 kills on the night, and 49 in the tournament. Her kill total was good for a 3.77 kills per set average, which was third best across the entire tournament.

Other tournament leaders from the Clan were Alison McKay with a top-three seven ace serves, and Madeline Hait with a top-five hitting percentage.

Against the Knights, SFU in straight sets 25-19, 25-22 and 25-22.

"We had a nice team effort tonight," said Head Coach Gina Schmidt. "We were able to build off this morning's match and continue our steady play both offensively and defensively. The tournament as a whole was great preparation for the start of our GNAC season next week."

AAU took an early lead in the first set before the Clan were able to tie the game at 10 and use that momentum to lead the remainder of the set. Robinson and Amanda Renkema were able to team up for several big blocks to extend SFU's lead.

In the second, the Clan led most of the set as well, despite pressure from the Knights late in the set.

SFU was able to hold them off in both the second and third sets to preserve their lead and ultimately take the match in three.

Renkema added 12 kills to Robinson's 13, while Alison McKay had 13 digs for the Clan.

With the win, SFU's record moves to 6-2 in non-conference play.

The Clan now return home to host their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference matches of the season, hosting Alaska Fairbanks and Alaska Anchorage on September 16 and 17 respectively.

Both games begin at 7:00 p.m. in SFU's West Gymnasium.
