Box Score Seattle, WA - The Simon Fraser University women's soccer team dropped their 2014 Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener, but showed moments of excitement against Seattle Pacific University, the second-best team in the conference standings.
The Clan fell 4-1 to the Falcons, the lone goal scored by
Olivia Aguiar with her third goal in two games.
Aguiar returns to the Clan following a red-shirt season, and already her addition has made a difference, as she sits in a top-three position in goals scored in the conference statistics.
SFU fell behind in the early moments of the game as the Falcons were able to net their first of the night at the three-minute mark, to go up 1-0, but the Clan remained undaunted, continuing to execute their game plan and put shots on net.
The visitors forced SPU's goalkeeper Alexa Huges to make five saves on the night, increasing their pressure in the front half of the field greatly from their 2013 campaign.
At the 22 minute mark the Falcons were able to score their second of the night as a blast from 20 yards out just sailed out of reach of
Priya Sandhu.
Sandhu recorded six saves on the night.
In the second half it was Aguiar that put the Clan on the scoreboard in the 76th minute, as she was able to contain an
Andrea Di Lorenzo shot and dribble around the keeper to put away her third of the season.
That would make the score 3-1 as the Falcons added a third goal in the 50th minute, and the score would be finalized in minute 79 as Heather Young was able to flick in a Falcon cross to secure the 4-1 score.
SFU had seven shots on the night.
With the loss the Clan fall to 0-5 on the season and 0-1 in the GNAC, but they will look to secure their first win of the season this Saturday, September 20 as they take on the Central Washington Wildcats.
Kick-off is at 12:00 p.m. in Ellensburg, WA.
