Box Score Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University women's soccer team recorded their first victory of the 2014 season with a 1-0 win over Western Oregon University Thursday night.
It was a night of firsts as it also marked the first victory for head coach
Annie Hamel since taking over the program this spring, as well as freshman
Sierra Leung's (Coquitlam, BC) first collegiate goal.
"I'm very excited," said the midfielder post game. "I've been struggling to finish my chances and tonight I turned that around in a big way. My teammates worked very hard to get the ball in a great position for me, and I was lucky enough to be on the receiving end and put the ball in."
SFU started the game strong opening with a goal in the 14
th minute of play as Leung was able to punch in a left-footed shot off a
Ruby Sandhu (Surrey, BC) cross.
From there, the Clan maintained control through the remainder of the first period, all the while looking for a second goal.
"The girls came out hard tonight and it paid off," said head coach
Annie Hamel. "We started strong but in the second period you could see their nervousness come out, but they did a good job of maintaining our lead."
In the second half SFU continued to compete, but a pressing Western Oregon side was on their tails the entire 45 minutes.
Western would have seven shots in the second half, looking to tie the score and force an overtime period, but the Clan defence was able to maintain control keep the ball out of their net.
Goalkeeper
Priya Sandhu (Surrey, BC) saved every shot fired her way, recording her first collegiate shut-out, and the Clan's first shut-out of the season.
Her biggest save came in the 74
th minute when the Wolves' Hailey Berg fired a shot to the left corner, forcing Sandhu into the air to punch the ball just out of harm's way.
With the win, the Clan improve to 1-5-1 on the season, and 1-1-0 in GNAC play.
"I hope the girls are able to retain the confidence they felt tonight," Hamel finished. "They really proved that they can play in this conference and play a strong match and I look forward to Saturday's game."
The Clan host Saint Martin's University this Saturday, September 27.
Kick-off is at 5:00 p.m. on Terry Fox Field.
