Box Score Billings, MT – The Simon Fraser University volleyball team mounted a thrilling comeback Thursday night to beat Montana State-Billings 3-2 on the road.
"I thought the team showed a lot of composure tonight," said head coach
Gina Schmidt. "It's never easy winning on the road, but our girls battled through the ups and downs and found a way to put things together in the final two sets".
SFU suffered from a slow start falling 25-15 in the first set, but that did not discourage the team as they set up for the second.
The two teams traded points in the early moments of the set before Montana would take 12-7 lead.
SFU would get a three-point run to make it 12-10, and would force a 13-13 tie game moments later.
From there they used momentum and did not look back, closing set two 25-22.
The Clan were unable to keep the momentum going in the third set however, falling 25-16 to the Yellowjackets who seemed to have the game in control.
It was the fourth set however where the Clan truly came to play, as they came out strong and confident, taking an early 11-4 lead.
They would continue to dominate, winning the fourth set by the largest margin of the night, 25-14, and force the fifth and final set.
The teams traded points in the early moments, neither one letting the other far ahead, until the Clan called a time out down 9-8.
Following that minute's rest SFU would score three unanswered points to put them up by two.
MSUB would call a time out down 11-9 in hopes of stalling the visitors, but the Clan were able to close strong, winning 15-12 and earning an exciting victory on the road.
Kelsey Robinson (Surrey, BC) and
Mackenzie Dunham (Lloydminster, AB) led the Clan with 13 and ten kills respectively, while
Devon May (Robert's Creek, BC),
Madison Power (Cloverdale, BC) and
Madeline Hait (Burnaby, BC) each added nine.
Brooklynn Gould-Bradbury (Lake Tapps, WA) had 31 assists and
Alison McKay (Port Moody, BC) had 29 digs on the night.
With the win the Clan improve to an 8-4 record and 2-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
After two days off, SFU will play again Saturday night, visiting Seattle Pacific at 7:30 p.m.
