Box Score Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University women's soccer team earned their first winning streak of the season, defeating Saint Martin's 1-0 on Saturday night.
Coming off their first victory of 2014 Thursday night, the Clan were looking to maintain their winning ways, and did so thanks to a first period goal by
Teagan Rae Sorokan (North Vancouver, BC).
"It is always stressful maintaining a 1-0 lead," said assistant coach
Anna Picarelli. "Teagan [Sorokan] and Kelsey [Athlerley] did excellent work in the centre defence and really allowed us to keep SMU out of our end. Priya [Sandhu] came up big when we needed her."
Sandhu registered her second shutout of the season, making three saves on the night, and keeping her team's clean record over 90-minutes.
SFU started strong, pressing the visitors early, and it paid off in the 14
th minute as the Clan were able to force a corner-kick in the Saints' end.
Devon Kollmyer's (Lynden, WA) set piece from the corner took one bounce in the box before Sorokan was able to strike it with a perfectly timed shot, putting a rocket past SMU keeper Sunny De Boer.
The Clan maintained their pressure in the first half, attempting five more shots, but the score would stand 1-0 at the half.
In the second period SMU returned to the pitch much more composed, as SFU's defensive line was forced to step up and make some big plays.
Soroken and Athlerley led that charge winning balls in the air and protecting SFU's goal, while Aja Choy Halo (Nanaimo, BC) and
Brianna Morrison (Pitt Meadows, BC) worked the sides.
"At the half we agreed we weren't playing out best, despite leading on the score sheet," continued Picarelli. "The girls played as a solid unit after that and we were able to earn the win."
SFU would have a total ten shots on the night.
With the win, the Clan exceed their conference win total from 2013, and 2012, and tie their conference win total from the past three season.
The win brings them to 2-5-1 on the season, and 2-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
SFU will look to improve on their record this Thursday, as they travel to Bellingham, WA to take on the Western Washington Vikings.
Kick-off is at 5:00 p.m.
