Box Score Burnaby, BC - The Simon Fraser University Clan volleyball team opened their September 6
th double-header strong, defeating the Vancouver Island Mariners in straight sets.
It is the first of two games scheduled for the afternoon, as the team wraps up a four-game weekend.
SFU won the first set 25-15, the second set 25-17 and the third set 25-20.
There were many fresh faces on the court for the Clan as
Christine Howlett (Delta, BC) and
Madison Power (Cloverdale, BC) started all three sets in only the third match of their collegiate careers.
"I'm so excited to be out here and doing my best," Howlett said. "The nerves are starting to go away and I'm finding myself ready to swing harder. The girls around me expect a lot so I have support around me encouraging me to play as best I can."
Amanda Renkema (Delta, BC) led the team in kills with 10 while
Jessica Young (Vancouver, BC) and Howlett added eight and seven respectively.
Alison McKay (Port Moody, BC) had 19 digs in the contest while Brooklyn Gould-Bradbury (Lake Tapps, WA) had 22 sets for the Clan.
VIU's Tylar Turnbull had eight kills for the visitors.
The Clan will be back in action this evening after a short recovery period, hosting the Capilano Blues to close the weekend. The game begins at 7:30 p.m.
