Clan Cools Off In 66-54 Loss To CWU

Simon Fraser made five field goals and scored just 17 second-half points in loss to CWU.

ELLENSBURG, WA – One game after scoring over 100 points for the first time in five years, the Simon Fraser University Clan was held to 54, losing 66-54 to Central Washington Wildcats in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game in Ellensburg, Wa.

Simon Fraser made five field goals and scored just 17 points in the second half as the Wildcats erased a 10-point second half deficit to defeat the Clan. Simon Fraser scored 62 second-half points in its 103-86 win over Northwest Nazarene Crusaders on Thursday.

The loss drops Simon Fraser to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the GNAC.

"We didn't take our shots, we took the shots they forced upon us," said Clan head coach Bruce Langford, who has 362 career coaching victories, leaving him one victory shy of equaling the career win mark of 363 set by legendary coach Allison McNeil at SFU.

Langford has a career mark of 362-86 competing in the CIS and NCAA Division II. McNeill compiled a record of 363-79 during her tenure at SFU when the Clan competed in the NAIA.

"I was disappointed with our team tonight because we didn't give a great effort and we certainly didn't compete on the boards," he added.

Trailing 37-34 at halftime, the Wildcats took their first lead of the game at 42-40. The teams were tied 45-45 with 10 minutes remaining and again, 49-49, with just under eight minutes to go. CWU went on an 11-2 run over the next seven minutes to secure the win with less than a minute to go.

Simon Fraser shot 58.3 percent in the opening half making 14 of its 24 shot attempts but in the second half the Clan went cold, shooting just 19.2%.

The Wildcats out-rebounded the Clan 43-23 and had 16 offensive rebounds which led to 20 second-chance points. SFU had just four offensive boards.

Central Washington scored 34 points in the paint compared to 12 for SFU and the Wildcats scored 16 points off 19 Clan turnovers. SFU scored just three points off 15 CWU turnovers and scored just two second chance points.

"We have to be better in the paint, we have to take care of the ball and we have to create second chance opportunities to be successful," said Langford. "We need to work on all of those things this week."

Senior forward Erin Chambers (Mission, BC), who came into the game as the nation's leading scorer averaging 24.4 per contests, was held to just 16 points and committed eight turnovers. Junior Meg Wilson (London, ON) had 13 points and six rebounds.

Guard Jasmine Edwards led CWU with 16 points eight assists and seven rebounds and played all 40 minutes. Forward Jasmine Parker scored 13 points a game-high 10 rebounds.

CWU snapped a four-game losing streak, improved to 8-6 overall and evened its GNAC record at 3-3.
