The SFU Basketball Year-Round Program sessions will consist of on-court technical development, complemented by speed, strength and power training sessions, as well as classroom instruction in areas of nutrition, sport psychology and other areas related to the science of sport and training as applied to the game of basketball.

To develop on-court technical ability

The SFU Basketball Year-Round Program will work to develop the fundamentals of the game. Technical focuses will include and not be limited to: passing, ball control, dribbling, shooting, and individual and collective defending. We will look at positional play and responsibilities, set plays, restarts, and participate in intra-squad games, coming away with a better understanding of different systems of play.

To maximize athletic performance through sport specific conditioning.
All participants will receive an initial physical assessment early in the year. There will be on-going assessment throughout the school year. Programs will target the following:

  • Muscular balance to best stabilize joints, prevent injury and facilitate performance
  • Enhance muscular endurance through anaerobic training and conditioning
  • Enhance cardiovascular potential
  • Increase general strength with emphasis on core
  • Maximize the power potential of the athlete through plyometric and power conversion training
  • Improve speed, agility, and reaction times of the athlete
  • Enhance flexibility

To provide the athlete with nutritional counseling

  • What foods are best for athletes?
  • When should these nutrients be consumed? (Pre-game, Post-game)
  • How much does the athlete need and in what proportions?
  • Should athletes take supplements? If so, what?
  • Importance of proper hydration

2025-2026 SFU Basketball Year-Round Program Schedule

As a result of some schools keeping the semester schedule, and some moving back to linear, the program will be offered in the following formats:

Linear (students will attend every second day for a whole school year)
Day 1 Cohort (blocks 1&2)
Day 2 Cohort (blocks 5&6)

The student-athlete will attend their home secondary school for all, but the two blocks assigned to the program participation. The program sessions will run from approximately 9:00 - 11:00am. As a Burnaby District student, participants in the program on a yearly basis will earn 8 secondary school credits per year.

As students consider their personal situations, they may need to meet with school counselors to discuss options. As an example, a student attending a semester school could choose the linear basketball schedule option, and then coordinate taking other courses online at the same time.

NOTE: Students in grades 10, 11, and 12 will receive elective credits for PE (10, 11, and 12), as well as elective credits for Sport Specific Training (10, 11, and 12). The SFU Basketball Year-Round Program will serve as the physical education component for grade 8 & 9 students, as well as an elective course in their timetable.
