Seattle Pacific closed the first half on a 31-10 run to turn a 15-4 deficit into a 35-25 lead at the break. The Falcons pushed the lead to 15 points early in the second half before the Clan came back to get to within two, 50-48, with under five minutes to play.
Senior forward
Erin Chambers (Mission, BC) cut it to within a single point (52-51) with a free throw with 2:17 remaining, but that's where the comeback ended. A three-pointer by guard
Katie Lowen with 39.1 seconds to go made it 58-54. That was one of only two three-pointers the Clan made on the night as they connected on just two of 19 attempts.
The Falcons scored their last 11 points at the free throw line to fend off the Clan. The Falcons hit 11 of 12 free throws in the final 3:04 and 17 of 19 (89.5 percent) for the night.
"We don't often quit and we found some resiliency to come back, and I liked that about our squad, but the reality is if we had done a better job shooting we could have won this game," said head coach
Bruce Langford.
Simon Fraser shot just 22-of-58 (37.9%) from the field. SPU also forced the Clan into 19 turnovers.
The Clan had beaten the Falcons four straight times dating back to the 2012-13 season heading into the contest. SPU had not won in Burnaby since a 65-60 victory on Dec. 18, 2010, the Clan's first year in the conference.
Chambers, the GNAC's leading scorer and the No. 2 scorer in NCAA Division II at 24.4 points per game, finished with 21, getting 15 of those in the second half. But Seattle Pacific limited her to 9-of-21 shooting and forced her to miss all six of her three point attempts.
Forward
Meg Wilson (London, ON) added 14 points, and freshman
Rachel Fradgley (London, ON) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, including seven offensive boards.
"I thought Fradgley was brilliant on the offensive glass and she is getting better every day. She's more assertive now and we are seeing the results," said Langford.
Guard Suzanna Ohlsen scored 19 points for the 19th-ranked Falcons while senior guard Aubree Callen added 17 points.
