Clan Loses Third Straight, 79-74

For the first time in five years, SFU has lost three straight games, dropping a 79-74 decision to MSUB

BILLINGS, MT.  – For the first time in five years, Simon Fraser University has lost three straight games after dropping a 79-74 decision to Montana State Billings Yellowjackets in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game Saturday night in Billings, MT.

Montana State Billings outscored the Clan 44-36 in the second half for a come-from-behind victory. Trailing 38-35 at the half, MSUB took its first lead of the second half 46-45 with 15:17 left to play. The Yellowjackets never trailed again, pushing the lead to double-digits, 66-54, but had to hold off the Clan several times to preserve the victory.

The Clan went on an 11-3 run to get back within four, 69-65, with 3:28 to play, when senior forward Erin Chambers scored nine of the team's 11 points. Chambers, the NCAA Division II leading scorer, finished with 28 points and 11 rebounds.

With less 33 seconds left to play, Chambers hit a 3-pointer to pull the Clan within four again, 76-72. But the Yellowjackets made their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

"We hurt ourselves tonight by making costly turnovers at crucial times and missing our free throws," said Clan coach Bruce Langford. "Erin was solid and kept us in it but we needed others to step up."

Simon Fraser outrebounded the 'Jackets 38-30, but had 17 turnovers. MSU Billings made 22 points off of those turnovers and scored 13 second chance points. The Yellowjackets also shot 48.3 percent (28-58) from the field.

SFU made just 13 of 22 (59.1%) free throws in the game and shot poorly from the three-point line, hitting just 11-of-32 shots (34.4%).

Meg Wilson was just shy of a double-double with 11 rebounds and nine points.

Simon Fraser fell to 6-5 in the GNAC, 10-9 overall, and remains in fourth place in the conference with seven games remaining. The Clan returns home for games Thursday, Feb. 5 against Central Washington (7 PM tipoff) and on Saturday, Feb. 7 against Northwest Nazarene with a special 1 PM tipoff.

The last time SFU lost three games in a row was during the 2010-11 season, its first in NCAA Division II, when the Clan had a nine-game losing streak. The current three-game losing streak began with losses to national ranked opponents Alaska Anchorage and Seattle Pacific.

MSUB is 12-9 overall, 4-7 in the GNAC.

Kayleen Goggins had 24 points to lead the Yellowjackets. Alisha Breen completed a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
