Aguiar Nets Winner Over MSUB 1-0

Simon Fraser University rebounded from its only loss of the season to defeat Montana State University Billing Yellowjackets 1-0 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s soccer game Thursday night on Terry Fox Field.

BURNABY, BC – Simon Fraser University rebounded from its only loss of the season to defeat Montana State University Billing Yellowjackets 1-0 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Thursday night on Terry Fox Field.

Olivia Aguiar's goal in the 17th minute stood as the game-winner, giving Simon Fraser a much needed win after suffering a 5-0 loss to No. 5 ranked Western Washington Vikings in its last outing Saturday, dropping the Clan from the ranks of the unbeaten.

"I was really proud of the way the girls responded after the loss to Western Washington," said SFU coach Annie Hamel. "I thought we showed a lot of maturity coming out the way we did. The girls didn't let that 18 minutes against Western (Washington) define them as a group."

"They put the loss behind them and put in a smashing performance that was the best they played all year against a very good opponent."

Simon Fraser gave up five goals in the first 18 minutes against Western Washington.

With the win over MSUB, Simon Fraser is now 4-1-2 (2-1-1 in the GNAC). It was just the second loss of the season for MSUB, now 4-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the GNAC.

Aguiar's game-winner came on a nifty three-way passing play started by sophomore defender Mikela Fong. Fong pushed forward down the right wing, sending a cross into the penalty area and onto the foot of freshman midfielder Katelyn Erhardsen. Guarded by two defenders, Erhardsen flicked the ball over to an unguarded Aguiar on her left flank and the junior struck home her second goal of the season.

Simon Fraser will next face Concordia University on October 3rd on Terry Fox Field beginning at 3:00 PM. Concordia is 4-1-2 and third in the conference heading into play on Thursday. Western Washington leads the conference with a 7-1-0 overall record heading into Thursday's action.

Simon Fraser almost added to its lead minutes into the second half. Freshman Allyson Dickson sent one off the crossbar and Aguiar almost scored again in the 55th minute but her low shot from 10 yards was blocked.

"I loved our speed of attack, the way we switched play and the number of chances we created," said Hamel. "We moved forward with speed and with purpose."

Simon Fraser fired 16 shots towards MSUB goalie Chloe Hopps, forcing her to make 7 saves. Priya Sandhu faced 10 shots in the Clan goal and made 3 saves for her fifth shutout of the season. Sandhu now owns a record of 4-1-2 this season.

SFU took 4 corner kicks while the Yellowjackets had 7.
