BELLINGHAM, Wa.— Western Washington University scored twice in the first nine minutes and the nationally Vikings achieved its longest winning streak in the last three decades with a 4-0 triumph over Simon Fraser University on Thursday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Harrington Field.
The Vikings, ranked No. 2 for the second consecutive week in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, improved to 15-1-0 overall and remained perfect in the GNAC at 10-0-0. The Vikings have won 13 straight, their longest victory string since a 38-match win streak from 1982-84.
SFU is 6-4-2 overall, 4-4-1 in the GNAC.
In other GNAC games played tonight, Concordia University scored in the 105th minute for a 1-0 win over visiting Montana State University Billings. The loss dropped MSUB to 6-6-2 overall on the season and one game under .500 at 4-5-1 in conference play.
SFU and MSUB are tied in GNAC standings, each with 13 points, and battling for one of four berths into the GNAC championship tournament to be played at SFU Nov. 5-7. MSUB has two games remaining while SFU has three.
Western Washington, Concordia (7-1-1) and Seattle Pacific (5-3-2) are the top three teams in the conference. The Vikings can clinch the GNAC regular-season championship in its next contest.
Western took control quickly against the Clan. In the fourth minute, Savanna Moorehouse fed a through ball to Gabriela Pelogi, who blasted a shot into the upper left corner from 10 yards. Moorehouse scored herself in the ninth minute, heading a cross past Clan goalkeeper
Priya Sandhu.
The Vikings added a pair of second-half goals in set pieces.
Western had a 12-6 edge in shots in posting their 10th shutout of the season.
Simon Fraser faces Central Washington Saturday at 11 AM in its next game, the last of five straight road contests.
Simon Fraser is hosting the GNAC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament for the first time with the semifinal matches on Thursday, Nov. 5 and the championship final set for Saturday, Nov. 7.
