ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Simon Fraser University scored less than two minutes into the game but then got blitzed by Central Washington University 5-2 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match on Saturday.
With the win CWU is now 6-8-1 overall and 4-5-1 in GNAC matches. Simon Fraser falls to 6-5-2, with a 4-5-1 mark in GNAC play.
The Wildcats offensive outpouring not only gave them a 5-2 victory, but a 5-3 advantage in the aggregate score between the two teams should they be tied in the GNAC standings at season's end. Both teams are competing for a GNAC post-season berth.
It was SFU's
Sierra Leung that opened the scoring. She took a pass from
Katelyn Erhardsen inside the 18 and beat CWU keeper Sydney Williams with a low shot, giving the Clan a 1-0 advantage just 1:59 into the match.
The Wildcats responded by bombarding Simon Fraser's net in the first half, firing off 11 shots, and finding the back of the net three times.
Reilly Retz responded in the 15th minute, redirecting a ball past SFU keeper
Priya Sandhu to level the score. CWU defender Aubrey Rodgers scored in the 19th minute and Mackenzie Nolte added another in the 40th minute.
The Wildcats scored two more in the second half before
Christina Dickson scored her team-leading seventh of the season in the 80th minute on a penalty kick.
CWU directed 19 shots at the Clan net forcing Sandhu to make five saves. CWU's goalkeeper Williams turned away three shots in the victory.
The Clan takes on Saint Martin's University on Thursday in Lacey, Wa., while the Wildcats will take on Concordia University on Thursday in Ellensburg.
Simon Fraser (13 points), Central Washington (13 points), Montana State Billings (16 points) and Seattle Pacific (17 points) are all battling for the final two post-season berths behind conference-leading and nationally ranked Western Washington and second place Concordia.
After the top two teams, four points separates the next four teams.
SFU, CWU, and SPU all have just two games remaining on the schedule. MSUB has one.
Simon Fraser is hosting the GNAC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament for the first time with the semifinal matches on Thursday, Nov. 5 and the championship final set for Saturday, Nov. 7.
