Lacey, Wa – The SFU women's volleyball team swept the Saint Martin's University Saints in three sets (25-19, 25-21, 25-15) in their last weekend of GNAC conference play.
This victory gives the Clan a 14-13 overall record, 10-9 in the GNAC.
The Clan opened up with a slow first set, allowing the Saints to hold the lead at the start. Four early kills by SMU attackers Davidson, Vegas, and Nesbitt coupled with attack errors on the SFU side gave the Saints a 9-5 start. A back and forth battle from there, the Clan was able to chip away at the deficit and tied the score at 16-16. From that point on the Clan began to take control of the match. Four kills by freshman
Tessa May followed by 3 each from
Devon May and
Emma Jennings enabled the Clan to take the set 25-19.
SFU started game 2 playing point for point with their opponents, but didn't let it last long. They remained in control and took an early lead of 10-6 thanks to kills by
Christine Howlett and
Madison Power. Although the Saints led in total set kills 14 to 12, the Clan's tough defense and
Alison McKay and
Tamara Nipp's 4 digs each allowed them to seal set 2 at a score of 25-21.
With 2 sets under their belts, the Clan dominated game 3. Though SMU's Mitchell and Vernoy put away 3 kills each for their team, SFU put a stop to their opponent's offense with 4 big blocks. They held onto their lead and took home the set and match with a final score of 25-15.
