POMONA, Calif. -- Simon Fraser University built an 11-point third quarter lead and then hung on for a 77-74 win over Cal Poly Pomona, picking up its first victory of the season in a women's non-conference basketball game played in Pomona, Calif., Saturday.
Simon Fraser led 67-56 after three quarters and was up 75-66 with just under six minutes remaining before the Broncos came roaring back.
CPP gave SFU a scare, going on an 8-2 run over the final few minutes and had the game-tying shot in their hands but guard Erin Hagan missed a three-pointer at the buzzer and the Clan came away with its first win of the season. Hagan was high scorer for the Broncos with 15 points.
The Clan's
Meg Wilson dominated the contest. Wilson, the Clan's senior forward who has battled through injury to start the season, led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting. Wilson also grabbed six rebounds, dished out four assists and blocked two shots in 36 minutes.
Wilson was also three of five from beyond the arc as the Clan connected on 10 of 25 three-pointers (40%).
Three other Clan players finished in double figures scoring:
Alisha Roberts had 12,
Elisa Homer 11 and
Ellen Kett 10.
Simon Fraser, which built a 16 point lead midway through the third quarter, shot 45.8% from the field (27-59) and was 13 of 15 from the free throw line.
The Broncos dominated in the paint with 40 points and scored 21 points off 18 Clan turnovers.
Simon Fraser is now 1-3 to start the season. All four games have been played on the road.
SFU plays California State University Los Angeles on Monday in California beginning at 7 PM.
The Clan opens conference play at home on December 3 against Alaska Anchorage followed by a home game Saturday, Dec. 5 against Alaska Fairbanks beginning at noon in the West Gym.
