Chambers Breaks GNAC Scoring Record

Senior Erin Chambers scored the third highest single game point total in SFU history to become the GNAC career scoring leader.

LACEY, WA. – Senior forward Erin Chambers became the Great Northwest Athletic Conference all-time scoring leader in dramatic fashion on Saturday, notching a career-high 41 points to lift Simon Fraser University to an 82-75 win over Saint Martin's University in the Marcus Pavilion.

Chambers (Mission, BC), the NCAA Division II scoring leader, now holds the GNAC all-time scoring record with1,842 career points.  The previous record of 1,831 points was held by Bobbi Knudsen of Montana State Billings (2010-14).

It was the third highest single game point total in Simon Fraser history, falling just short of the school record of 45 points set by Canadian Olympian and Clan Hall of Famer Teresa Gabriele (nee Kleindienst) against Trinity Western University during the 2001-02 season. Former Canadian Olympian and Clan Hall of Famer Michelle Hendry is also in the record books ahead of Chambers, having scored 42 points against Central Washington during the 1989-90 season.

Chambers just missed the GNAC single game scoring record of 45 points as well.

Chambers played all 40 minutes, shooting 13-of-23 from the field and 13-of-16 from the free throw line. Senior guard Katie Lowen added 15 points and Meg Wilson recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

"Erin shot the ball extremely well with tight defense on her all night," said Clan head coach Bruce Langford. "It was nice to see her get the record and win the game. I thought it was a real team effort tonight."

Chambers and Lowen will be honoured in the final home game of the season on Saturday, Feb. 21 against Alaska. The second-to-last home game for the Clan is against nationally ranked and conference leading Alaska Anchorage on Thursday, Feb. 19.

Simon Fraser moves to 13-10 overall and 9-6 in league play while the Saints fell to 8-14 overall and 5-9 in the GNAC.

SFU led 40-34 at the half.

In the second half, SFU went up by its biggest lead of 16 at 70-54 with eight minutes left in the game. The Saints went on a run to come within five, 72-67, with under three minutes remaining. But the Clan would score another 10 points, with eight points coming from the free throw line to take the win.

"I thought we competed hard early, we moved the ball well, and took quality shots," said Langford. "We got good contributions from all players who saw action and the bench showed a lot of emotion."

Liz Mills recorded a career high 22 points to lead the Saints.
