BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Simon Fraser University had its three game winning streak snapped as Western Washington University led wire-to-wire in a 69-58 victory over the Clan Tuesday evening in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game.
The Vikings improved to 12-5 overall and gained sole possession of first place in the GNAC with an 8-1 league mark. WWU has won 11 of its last 13 games. Simon Fraser fell to 7-7 overall and 5-4 in GNAC play.
WWU led 29-25 at halftime, but came out with a dominating third quarter out-scoring the Clan 28-19 to take a 13-point lead at 57-44. The Clan never came within 10 points the rest of the way.
The Clan was led by 21 points from
Rachel Fradgley on 9-for-18 shooting and 11 points from senior guard
Alisha Roberts.
Simon Fraser had been averaging 74.5 points, second in the GNAC only behind Alaska Anchorage, but the Vikings held the Clan to fewer than 60 points for the fourth time this season. SFU was held to 35.9% from the field (23-for-64) and was out-rebounded 41 to 30.
WWU shot 51.9% from the field (27-for-52), including 5-for-10 from 3-point range.
In its three straight wins the Clan defeated its opponents by an average of 25.33 points per game.
Elisa Homer, who leads the GNAC in three-point field goals made per game (3.9) and is fourth in scoring (16.6), was held to eight points and three-of-13 shooting. Homer was coming off a 32-point performance in the Clan's last outing.
Ellen Kett, arguably the best in the GNAC at the point guard position this season, was held to five points. Kett leads all of Division II in three-point field goal percentage (.574) but went 0-for-1 against the Vikings.
WWU guard Taylor Peacocke was 9-for-11 from the field and hit a career-high four 3-pointers (4-for-5) to lead the Vikings. Peacocke scored a season-high 24 points. WWU center Kayla Bernsen notched her fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. She also recorded 5 blocked shots.
The SFU women's team will be back in action on the road Saturday against Montana State University Billings.
