BURNABY, BC - A dominant first half led the SFU Clan women's soccer team (4-3-1, 2-2-0) to a blowout decision over the Western Oregon Wolves (4-6-0, 1-4-0) on Saturday afternoon, as four first-half goals paved the way for a 6-0 win.
Monpreet Heer led the offensive assault with two goals and two assists, while
Sierra Leung notched a goal and a helper, and
Katelyn Erhardsen,
Emma Pringle, and
Jenna Baxter each added single markers for SFU. In goal,
Priya Sandhu and
Simone Tessler were perfect, picking up a combined clean sheet with five saves between them.
Even outside the final score, the Clan dominated the game from start to finish, outshooting Western Oregon 38-10, with a remarkable 24 of SFU's attempts making it to Wolves' goalkeeper Caitlin Kastelic.
Erhardsen opened the floodgates in the 16th minute, outracing a defender to a loose ball in the Wolves' end before getting off a high-arcing lob shot that pinged down and in off the crossbar.
Pringle doubled the Clan lead not 35 seconds later, as the freshman star nabbed her team-high sixth goal of the season on a terrific header from inside the Western Oregon box. Heer started the play off with a neat cross from the right wing.
Heer got on the board herself at the game's 30-minute mark, as the forward converted from the spot after
Christina Dickson was hauled down in the Wolves' 18-yard box.
The Clan, and Heer, wasted no time getting that fourth marker, as the redshirt freshman made it 4-0 just two minutes later. On a quick pass from
Allyson Dickson off the left sideline, Heer made a quick move to her left before firing from 20 yards out, beating Kastelic clean.
Baxter netted her first as a member of the Clan 25 minutes into the second stanza. Leung started the play with some dogged work down the left sideline deep in Wolves territory, getting the ball to Heer under pressure. The forward made a heads-up pass to find Baxter open at the top of the box, and the Oregon State transfer got off a one-timer that went straight to the top-right corner.
Leung closed out the day's scoring in the 87th minute, taking a short pass from
Christina Dickson near midfield before walking right down the middle of the park untouched, firing a low shot past Kastelic from the top of the box..
SFU will look to carry their now considerable momentum into next week, as they prepare for the Northwest Nazarene Crusaders to make their way to Terry Fox Field. The Clan and Crusaders are set to kick off at 4:30 pm on Friday, October 6.
