Dickson's brace paces Clan to 3-0 win over Northwest Nazarene

Sophomore midfielder nets her first two goals of the year in spectacular fashion

BURNABY, BC - And the goals keep coming.

Less than a week after their 6-0 blowout of Western Oregon, the SFU Clan women's soccer team (5-3-1, 3-2-0) kept up the offense in a dominant 3-0 win over the Northwest Nazarene Crusaders (3-8-0, 1-5-0) on Thursday evening.

Christina Dickson played the starring role in the contest, netting a pair of spectacular goals, her first two of the season. Katelyn Erhardsen also got on the score sheet, bagging her third goal of the season. The SFU backline made life easy on Priya Sandhu, as the goalkeeper only had to make two stops for her fifth clean sheet of the season.

"I know Christina has put a lot of pressure on herself to find the score sheet, and tonight she did in a very big way," said SFU head coach Annie Hamel. "It's good for her, and hopefully it carries forward – the momentum, and her confidence, as well."

Dickson opened the scoring at the 20-minute mark of the first stanza, as the midfielder cut in off the left flank and let fly from 20 yards out, beating Crusaders goalkeeper Danielle Ortiz to the lower right-hand corner.

Despite going into halftime with a 1-0 lead, Hamel wasn't altogether pleased.

"I thought we had a bit of a slow start in the first half," said Hamel. "Even coming out with a 1-0 lead at half, I thought that was a bit under expectations for us. We wanted to have a really strong start and put this game away early."

The Clan upped their game in the second stanza, pouring on six shots in just the first 20 minutes.

With just 14 minutes remaining in the contest, the Clan got that much-needed second goal, and it came in spectacular fashion.

Again on the left wing, 15 yards out from goal, the right-footed Dickon made a quick cut to get separation from her defender before unleashing a brilliant high-arcing shot that pinged down off the crossbar and in.

Just three minutes after that, Erhardsen locked the game down, smartly jumping on a loose ball in the Northwest Nazarene end and blasting a one-touch rocket past Ortiz before she could blink.

"When they got going in the second half, there was really good rhythm and tempo," assessed Hamel. "Some excellent finishes, and that's what I'm really happy about."

The Clan will look to continue this run of form against the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets (2-5-2, 2-1-1), who will make their way to Terry Fox Field this Saturday, October 8. The two sides are scheduled to clash at 12:00 pm.
