Burnaby, BC - A three-goal explosion in the second half sealed an impressive bounceback win for the SFU Clan women's soccer team (6-4-1, 4-3-0) on Tuesday afternoon, as they toppled the Saint Martin's Saints (2-10-1, 1-6-0) 4-0 on the road.
Clan defenders
Carli Grosso and
Emma Lobo got their first markers of the season, as did senior forward
Sophie D'Souza in the game's closing minutes. Forward
Christina Dickson also kept up her run of recent form, netting her third goal in as many games.
"It was important to get a win
today," said SFU head coach
Annie Hamel, referring to her squad's
tough 2-1 loss to the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets last week. "I think we made it a little harder on ourselves than it needed to be. We're putting more of the focus from today on our strong second half performance, but we're not getting ahead of ourselves."
In this game, however, the Clan did get ahead pretty early. Just seven minutes in,
Katelyn Erhardsen found Grosso inside the six-yard box with a nifty lob pass, and the defender made solid contact to head the ball past Saints goalkeeper Ali Koehler.
Despite firing eight first-half shots in Koehler's direction, only Grosso's marker counted as a shot on goal.
That accuracy problem was solved in spectacular fashion early in the second half, as Lobo took a pass just outside the 18 and launched a one-touch blast into the top of the net for her first collegiate goal.
Lobo, who was all over the pitch in both directions on Tuesday, drew considerable praise from her coach.
"I thought
Emma Lobo was extraordinary today," said Hamel. "That goal she scored was one of the nicest I've seen this year."
Dickson put the Clan up 3-0 just two minutes later, finishing off a rebound from 10 yards out after a hot shot from midfielder
Kaely Biring handcuffed Koehler.
With the result in hand, Hamel was afforded the opportunity to get younger players some game experience and rest some of her veterans – just two outfield players saw the full 90 minutes on Tuesday (Lobo and
Teagan Sorokan).
"We have a tough game coming
Saturday, and I'm glad we were able to rest some of our players who had been playing a lot," noted Hamel. "It's always nice when we can rotate players in and out and not have a drop off."
With three minutes to go in the contest, D'Souza wrapped up the day's scoring with a great finish of her own. Taking a ball from
Monpreet Heer, D'Souza drilled one from 25 yards out.
The Clan heads down to Seattle, WA for its next game this Saturday, October 15 against the Seattle Pacific Falcons. Kick-off is set for 4:00 pm.
