Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University women's volleyball team swept Western Oregon University Wolves 25-21, 25-15 and 25-15 on Saturday evening in the West Gym to win its 17
th game of the season, tied for the most wins in a season in the NCAA era.
The Clan moved to 17-5 overall and 10-4 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference after its second consecutive straights sets win in back-to-back home contests. SFU sits third in the conference.
Simon Fraser finished 17-9 in 2014, its best record since joining the NCAA in 2010.
"I think it shows the growth of our program over the past three seasons and we are headed in the right direction but we are not done yet," said Clan head coach
Gina Schmidt. "There are still games (six) left and lots more that we want to accomplish."
Simon Fraser was in complete control of the contest from start to finish, playing its second game in as many nights.
Simon Fraser was led in kills by
Emma Jennings (12),
Tessa May (10) and freshman
Kirsten Pinkney (8). Jennings also contributed 13 digs.
"This was a real team effort because Western Oregon strategically tried to contain
Tessa May and that left some of our hitters open," said Schmidt. "Tamara (Nipp) did a great job of finding our hitters in scoring position and setting them up to take advantage of the one-on-one opportunities at the net."
Nipp finished with a game-high 42 assists while senior libero
Alison McKay contributed a game-high 30 digs.
The Clan will now go on the road for two games against Central Washington (Nov. 3) and Northwest Nazarene (Nov. 5).
