BURNABY, BC – The Simon Fraser University women's basketball team lost 61-56 in overtime to the Seattle Pacific Falcons Saturday night, ending the Clan's five game win streak.
The game was tied 50-50 at the end of 40 minutes, but the Falcons' Jordan McPhee scored seven of Seattle Pacific's 11 points in overtime, including two clinching free throws with five seconds left, as the Falcons came back from 15 down in the third quarter to beat the Clan.
Simon Fraser is now 12-9 overall and 10-6 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Falcons sit at 9-14 overall (6-10 in conference).
SFU was up 39-24 midway through the third quarter. It was still 42-29, when SPU closed out the third with the first six points of what would become a 13-0 run to tie the game at 42-42 with 6:31 left in the fourth.
Guard Lindsay Lee buried a 3-pointer from the left corner to tie it at 50-50 with 52.3 second remaining, and neither team scored through the rest of regulation.
Seattle Pacific was up 59-56 after Courtney Hollander made the first two free throws with 7.3 seconds left in overtime. She missed the second, and the Clan rebounded, and then called a timeout with the intent of advancing the ball to front court under this year's new rule allowing a team to do so.
The timeout was granted, but Simon Fraser was not allowed to advance the ball. In the subsequent dispute, a technical foul was whistled on Clan head coach
Bruce Langford. McPhee sank the two free throws for a 61-56 lead with five seconds left, making it a two-possession game, and effectively clinching it.
The Clan was led in scoring by
Alisha Roberts,
Elisa Homer, and
Rachel Fradgley. Roberts went 6-of-16
from behind the 3 point line, scoring 20 points, and she also stole the ball a team-leading four times.
Elisa Homer scored 11 points while Fradgley earned a double-double by scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
SFU dominated the first half, going into halftime with a 15 point lead, but the Clan struggled to score in the second half, scoring only 8 in each of the third and fourth quarters. Simon Fraser's first half was capitalized by a strong defensive effort. They allowed SPU to score 19 points, holding them to 6 of 24 on field goal attempts.
SFU shot 32% from field goal range, as well as 31% from beyond the arc in the game. Seattle Pacific responded with a 30% success rate from the field and 41% on their 3 pointers. SFU scored 56% of their free throw attempts (9-16) while SPU hit 72% (18-25).
SPU was led by the play of Courtney Hollander and Jordan McPhee. Both players scored 16 points. Hollander also recorded a double-double. She secured 12 rebounds to go along with her points.
SFU will look to get back on track this Tuesday when they play Western Washington. The game will take place at 7 PM in the West Gym.
