CARSON, CA - In a battle of previously undefeated teams, the SFU Clan women's soccer team (2-0-1) emerged the victor on Saturday, taking down the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (3-1-0) 1-0 in extra time.
After the two sides went toe-to-toe during a scoreless regulation, it was the Clan's prized freshman Emma Pringle who played hero in the extra frame. Just three minutes in, Clan midfielder Jenna Baxter delivered a terrific free kick from the edge of the 18, and Pringle took advantage, connecting with a header that zipped past Toros goalkeeper Elisa Martin.
The goal marked Pringle's third tally of the season, as the freshman forward has posted all three of SFU's goals in 2016.
Emma is a fantastic player and person, and I am not surprised by how well she is doing," remarked head coach Annie Hamel. "She understands what she brings to the team, and her teammates do as well. We are just feeding her game."
While extra time belonged to Pringle, regulation was a war of attrition between two excellent defensive units. While SFU held a decided 10-6 advantage in shots through 90 minutes, Martin was excellent in the Cal State DH goal, stopping all four shots that made it to her goal.
On SFU's defensive of the pitch, that terrific backline headed by Carli Grosso, Emma Lobo, Allyson Dickson, and Teagan Sorokan rendered the Toros attack ineffective, as Cal State DH only mustered just two shots on target during the contest. On both attempts, SFU goalkeeper Priya Sandhu was there to shut it down, en route to picking up her third clean sheet in as many outings.
"The backline is solid and Priya has been showing a lot of maturity out there," noted Hamel. "We have pace at the back and don't ever give up, so we are hard to break down."
Aside from a timely finish and some terrific defending, a factor that played in SFU's favour was their exceptionally deep roster, as 15 outfield players saw more than 30 minutes of action. Against a physical opponent in Cal State DH, and coming off an overtime game against Cal State LA, the ability to get some players rest was invaluable.
Hamel confirmed as much, saying "It took a lot of numbers to get this done and I'm so proud of everyone."
The Clan have one more match waiting for them in Los Angeles, as they will take on the Concordia University Eagles (2-0-1) on Tuesday, September 13. Kick-off is set for 1:00 pm.
