7-1 Clan Off To Best Start In NCAA Era

Improving to 7-1 on the season, SFU is off to the best start in the program's NCAA history

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The SFU Clan (7-1) ended the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase on the highest of notes Saturday, claiming a pair of straight-set victories over the Chaminade University Silverswords (6-3) and the Cal State LA Golden Eagles (4-4) to finish the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record.

Now 7-1 on the season, the Clan are off to the program's best-ever start after eight NCAA contests, bettering their mark of 6-2 from 2014.SFU returns home to the West Gym on September 14 at 7:00 pm to host border rival Western Washington Vikings in its GNAC conference opener. The game will be the team's second annual Red Night and fans attending are encouraged to wear red to the game to show support for the Clan. The first 100 fans will receive a red "NCAAeh" t-shirt. Doors open at 6:00 PM.

Taking on the Silverswords in the morning, SFU led from start to finish, with set scores of 25-22, 25-15, and 25-20.

Emma Jennings again paced the Clan attack, posting 13 kills on just 30 swings. Middle Tessa May and setter Tamara Nipp also had terrific outings for SFU, with May knocking down eight kills (on just 13 attempts) and adding a game-high seven blocks, while Nipp notched 38 assists, two aces, three blocks and 10 digs in a do-it-all performance.

Aside from those key performers, SFU head coach Gina Schmidt pointed to her lineup's depth on the attack as the deciding factor.

"We talked about wanting to be as consistent as possible on this last day of the tournament and I think we accomplished that today. Everyone contributed to the offense which made it tough for Chaminade to key on any one player," said Schmidt, whose squad had eight players record at least a single kill against the Silverswords.

In their evening matchup with the Golden Eagles, the Clan were excellent defensively. Holding the talented Californian squad at bay with excellent ball placement and defensive coverage, SFU took the match by set scores of 25-20, 25-15, and 25-17.

"With the exception of a couple of small runs we gave up, we were able to sideout very efficiently tonight," assessed Schmidt. "Cal State LA is a very athletic team with several offensive threats. We were able to serve tough and keep them off balance for the majority of the match."

Offensively, the Clan got 12 kills from Devon May and eight apiece from Jennings and Christine Howlett. Tessa May chipped in with seven kills, while Madison Power knocked down eight to go with a game-high three blocks.

Overall, a 4-0 record at the regional tournament should bode well for Schmidt's side later on in the year.

"I was really pleased with the way our team performed this weekend. Our girls were prepared and focussed throughout the three-day tournament and we will need to continue this as the GNAC season starts next week," said Schmidt. "Obviously, we're happy to come out of the preseason with a strong record against some good opponents. Hopefully, we will be in a position by the end of the season where these results will help our positioning within the region."

SFU will return home to the West Gym on September 14 at 7:00 pm to host border rival Western Washington Vikings in its first GNAC conference game of the season. The game will be the team's second annual Red Night and fans attending the game are encouraged to wear red to the game to show your support for the Clan.
