BURNABY, BC –
In a clash of GNAC giants, the SFU Clan volleyball team (10-2, 3-1) had their eight game winning streak snapped on Saturday night against the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves (14-1, 4-0), falling in straight sets.
The final set scores read 25-19, 25-19, and 25-14 for the visiting Seawolves.
"Anchorage is a good team," stated SFU head coach GIna Schmidt. "They executed on both sides of the ball, and we weren't able to find enough answers. For us, the biggest problem offensively was our first contact, and the initial set up for an attack."
SFU sophomore middle
Tessa May led the Clan with nine kills, while outside hitters
Emma Jennings and
Devon May picked up six apiece. Libero
Alison McKay finished with 28 digs and two aces.
"I felt we defended well for the most part, and there were a few really good rallies," said Schmidt. "We just weren't able to finish."
For Alaska Anchorage, it was outside hitter Leah Swiss and middle blocker Erin Braun doing damage offensively, as the two knocked down 10 kills each, with the latter adding five blocks. Sophomore libero Kayla Militante-Amper was productive, accounting for 17 digs and a pair of aces.
Braun, along with fellow middle Diana Fa'amausili, combined for 11 blocks in the contest, a point that Schmidt made note of in her analysis.
"They blocked well, but we have to make better decisions," said the coach. "Swinging higher, picking our spots better, we'll need to adjust to that, just better decision making would have helped."
The Clan will have to make adjustments quickly, as they will make their way to Monmouth, OR, to take on the Western Oregon Wolves next week. The GNAC foes will get underway at 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 29.
