BURNABY, BC – Junior midfielder Katelyn Erhardsen scored on a penalty kick in the second overtime to give the Simon Fraser University women's soccer team a come-from-behind win against California State University Los Angeles in a non-conference game on Monday.
 
The penalty kick was awarded after forward Emma Pringle was taken down in the box accelerating past the defender in the closing minutes of the second extra period. Erhardsen sent a low shot to the left corner past the hands of CSULA goalkeeper Adriana Maldonado who guessed correctly on the penalty kick shot. It was Erhardsen's first of the season.
 
"I thought Katelyn was immense for us through the whole game, not only with her play but with her leadership as well," said Clan head coach Annie Hamel. "She's an extraordinary player and she is showing the confidence to live up to that."
 
Simon Fraser is now 2-0 to start the season while CSULA drops to 1-1.
 
"We were slow getting into our game plan but once we did the girls looked in control," said Hamel. "I'm most pleased with coming back from a goal down and finding a way to secure the win in overtime. The team is really finding its identity right now and moments like today can have a huge positive impact on the rest of the season."
 
CSULA opened the scoring in the 52nd minute when substitute Victoria Arredondo tapped in a cross from Paulina Chiadez for her first of the season.
 
SFU pressured for most of the second half and was able to equalize in the 72nd minute. Pringle swung in a cross that Maldonado blocked but the ball fell at the feet of sophomore Lauren Fuerderer, who poked it home to tie the game. It was Fuerderer's first goal of her career.
 
Priya Sandha got the start in goal for the Clan, and made the first big save of the game in the 18th minute. Tatiana Zuvic struck the ball from 10 yards away but Sandhu stuck out her left leg to make a clutch save to keep the game level.
 
Erhardsen had SFU's best chance of the first half with just under two minute left, but CSULA's Maldonado was up to the task, making a quality save. The score at the half was 0-0.
 
SFU's Jenna-lee Baxter came close to scoring shortly after the game's opening goal but her shot from 20 yards out was tipped over the crossbar by the goalkeeper.
 
Senior keeper Priya Sandhu made six saves to pick up her second win of the year. Maldonado also made six saves. Both teams directed 14 shots on goal.
 
Simon Fraser will play its second game of a four-game home stand on Friday, September 8, against the Stanislaus State. Kick-off is at 5pm on Terry Fox Field. The match will also be live streamed on Clan TV.
