SFU volleyball sweeps Western Oregon in straight sets

Wolves on the receiving end of Clan’s second straight 3-0 win, Kirsten Pinkney once again leads kill count.

MONMOUTH, OR — It was another highly productive offensive night for Kirsten Pinkney and the SFU women's volleyball team. Leading the team to another straight sets win, this time over the Western Oregon University Wolves, the junior outside hitter had 14 kills with a .414 hitting percentage.

Improving both their overall and GNAC records to over the .500 mark, the Clan got better as the night went along. After squeaking out a close first set, they came together to close out strong against the Wolves and managed to make the road match a short affair.

Defensively, senior libero Jayme Bratsberg did her job and racked up 24 digs, while setter Julia Tays had 10 digs to go along with 38 assists and three kills. Middle blocker Tessa May also had a solid outing with 11 kills and Tamara Clarke was a factor with eight kills and seven digs.

26-24 SFU | The opener was a little too close for comfort, but the Clan never fully lost command of the game. While the lead swung back-and-forth in the early stages, the second half didn't have any lead changes. WOU had runs that brought the score to 18-18 and 22-22, but SFU hung on for the win.

25-19 SFU | Down 3-1, the Clan started their ascent to a second set win on a run that included back-to-back service aces for Bratsburg. May was also dominant with five kills as the Clan eventually cruised to victory.

25-17 SFU | Pinkney was especially good when it mattered most on Thursday night and she had seven kills in the final set. Tied at 3-3, she subbed into the game and proceeded to lay three enormous kills on the Wolves. From there, the Clan kept their lead and fitting ended the night after a point earned by Pinkney.

Coach's Take | "It took us a bit of time to find our rhythm but once we settled in, we were able to take advantage of some mismatches in the front row." - Gina Schmidt, SFU volleyball head coach

Up Next | Simon Fraser will look to keep the good times rolling on Saturday as they face Concordia University on the road. The Cavaliers are 4-5 in the GNAC this season but have lost their last four matches in straight sets.
