SFU women’s soccer hang tight to draw 1-1 with No. 10 Concordia

Great goalkeeping and defence, along with offensive flourishes, extend Clan unbeaten streak to three games

PORTLAND, OR — Christina Dickson scored at the 63rd minute of the second half to help the Simon Fraser University women's soccer team earn a big road draw on Thursday.

Facing the undefeated Concordia University Cavaliers, ranked 10th in the entire NCAA Division II, the Clan put together a gutsy effort and became the first conference opponent to take away a point from the Cavs this season.

SFU was led by a strong performance from freshman keeper Nicole Anderson, who made 10 saves including some game saves in extra time. The team's defence also did their part, with Carli Grosso, Emma Lobo and Allyson Dickson all making key tackles to frustrate CU the entire game.

With the tie, the women are now on a three-game undefeated streak and after five Great Northwest Athletic Conference games, the team is yet to allow more than a single goal in an outing.

'8 | Jenna-lee Baxter forces the Concordia goalie to make a tough grab as she makes a timely offensive tackle and charges into the box, unloading a quality shot.

'17 | The Cavaliers press and forward Sydney Van Steenberge gets her head on a cross, forcing Anderson to make a leaping stop and deflect the ball over the crossbar.

'29 | Allyson Dickson saves the day as she makes a perfectly timed slide tackle on streaking midfielder Kayla Braunthal in the box to allow Anderson to dive in and pick up the ball.

'48 | GOAL: Free to run along the backline and into the Clan's box, midfielder Gabrielle Ewing crosses the ball in for forward Kyra Radcliffe who strikes the ball off an SFU defender to open the scoring for CU.

'63 | GOAL: Katelyn Erhardsen makes an impeccable run towards the goal, passing the ball just in time to find Christina Dickson posted up against the near post. Taking some contact but finishing the play, she earned her fourth of the season as she brought her team level.

'92 | Another golden chance for Braunthal is stopped by a brilliant leaping effort from Anderson, who deflects a one-timer labeled for the crossbar and prevents a sudden-death overtime winner.

'103 | SFU gets a great chance to win the game following a bizarre situation. Stumbling while dribbling the ball just outside her own box, CU keeper Hailey Asato makes a deliberate hand ball as Emma Pringle provides pressure. After some time with the medical staff, she leaves the game with a yellow card. On the ensuing free kick, Erhardsen was unable to test the team's backup goalie and sailed it over the net.

Coach's take | "Great result against a good side. The girls were resilient and demonstrated that 'refuse to lose' attitude." - Annie Hamel, SFU women's soccer head coach

Up Next | Simon Fraser will look to continue their hot play on the road against Western Oregon University on Saturday. The Wolves have lost both of their two most recent matches by 3-0 deficits and are 4-5-2 so far this season.
