PORTLAND, OR — Three players on the Simon Fraser University women's basketball team have been recognized for their outstanding performances in the classroom, making the cut for the 2018-19 GNAC All-Academic Team.
Junior Tayler Drynan earned her spot for a second straight season, while sophomores Jessica Jones and Kendal Sands are new additions to the elite group of 53 honorees across the conference.
To qualify for the team, a student-athlete must be of sophomore standing or higher, be in their second season at the nominating school and have a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade point average.
A business administration student, Drynan achieved a 3.69 GPA, while Sands put up a 3.78 GPA in Kinesiology and Jones was just one of 12 players in the GNAC with a GPA greater than 3.80, achieving a 3.85 in her second year studying towards a degree in criminology.
Jones is currently second in scoring for the 12-7 SFU team, averaging 10.3 points per game, and her 2.3 three-pointers per game pace is fifth in the entire conference. As SFU's starting point guard, Drynan is third in team scoring with a 9.5 points per game average, while fourth in the conference with 4.1 assists per game.
Coming off the bench, Sands has also been a very effective player for the Clan this season and is fifth in team scoring with 7.1 points per game. She is also the league leader in three-point field goal percentage, having made 12-of-23 long-range shots so far this year, including the recent game-winning basket over the then-undefeated Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks.
After 12 conference games, SFU holds an 8-4 record and are in third place in the GNAC.
