BURNABY, BC --- On Sunday afternoon at Beedie Field, the Simon Fraser University Softball Team picked up two more wins over the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets by final scores of 12-4 and 5-4.
With the wins, Simon Fraser secured a 4-0 sweep of the weekend against MSUB, and moved to 13-5 overall, as well as 7-1 in conference. Simon Fraser has now won 10 of their last 11 games, spanning back to a win over St. Mary's University in the Cactus Classic on February 15th.
In game one of the matchup vs. MSUB, Simon Fraser put up nine runs in the 2
nd and 3
rd innings. While the Yellowjackets were able to add four runs of their own in the top of the third, extra base hits by Boulanger and Ogg kept SFU ahead, as they headed into the 4
th inning up 9-4.
Following the early inning action, with SFU up to bat in the sixth, Mel Groeneweggen hit a three run homer which ended the game early, as SFU jumped ahead by an eight run margin at 12-4.
Leading the way for SFU statistically in the first game was
Anissa Zacharczuk, who picked up her 10
th win of the season, and pitched 6 complete innings allowing just four earned runs and six hits. Offensively, Mel Groeneweggen had 3 RBI's, while both
Alex Ogg and
Hanna Finkelstein added two RBI's of their own.
In the second game of the double header, Simon Fraser got off to a bit of a slow start, and the Yellowjackets would be up 2-0 after four full innings of play. Maddy Lincoln pitched well in the circle for MSUB, but Simon Fraser was eventually able to break things open in the 5
th, and got themselves back within one on a
Chelsea Hotner single, which scored
Megan Duclos.
Following the fifth inning success, SFU took the lead in the sixth, with a four run outburst.
Alex Ogg hit a two run double to start things off, and after
Hanna Finkelstein advanced runners on a fielder's choice,
Alex Ogg stole home on a wild pitch which put SFU up 5-2.
Although MSUB was able to score two runs late on in the top half of the seventh, SFU was eventually able to secure the victory on a flyout to centre field, as SFU wrapped up the series sweep with a 5-4 win.
SFU freshman
Julia Hansen claimed the win in the circle with a complete game performance: allowing just four earned runs and adding three strikeouts. At the plate,
Alex Ogg had 2 RBI's, while
Chelsea Hotner went 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Up next, Simon Fraser will be in Central Washington for matchups with the Wildcats at 1PM and 3PM March 14
th.
