BURNABY, BC – Simon Fraser University volleyball head coach
Gina Schmidt announced the signing of three student-athletes to the class of 2020. Davida Hill, Sophie Lachapelle, and Kohl Peters have signed National Letters of Intent to join Canada's NCAA team next season.
"We are thrilled to welcome these three accomplished athletes into our SFU Volleyball program. While 2020 has provided the world with many unprecedented challenges, we feel very fortunate to have such a talented and well-rounded group joining us this fall. All three players have come from successful high school programs and we are excited to see the positive impact they will have on the future of SFU volleyball." – Gina Schmidt, Head Coach
Davida Hill –
Surrey, BC / Pacific Academy
Position: Outside Hitter
Height: 6'0"
Club Team: Rain City
Schmidt: "
Davida is a dynamic athlete whose speed and explosiveness make her a threat at the outside hitting position. She has grown up as a multi-sport athlete and has enjoyed success at a number of levels. We believe she will be able to translate this success into the NCAA game. We look forward to having Davida's competitive drive and positive attitude in our gym on a daily basis."
Davida Hill has helped Pacific Academy become a perennial BC High School AA powerhouse. As one of the top attackers on her team, Hill was named a provincial All-Star in back-to-back years as the Breakers won gold at the 2018 Provincial Championships and followed it up with a silver medal in 2019. She was also given the nod by a panel of BC collegiate coaches as one of the top 15 senior high school players in the province. In addition, Davida has experience with Team BC where she brought home a bronze medal from the Canada Cup in Halifax last summer. Hill has also garnered recognition as both a basketball player and beach volleyball athlete throughout her high school career. She hopes to major in Criminology this coming fall when she begins her studies at SFU.
Why SFU? "My main reason for choosing SFU was the team atmosphere and the coaches. Gina is such a great coach and I am excited to learn from her. SFU also has a good balance between sports and school which is important to me."
Sophie Lachapelle –
Kelowna, BC / Kelowna Secondary School
Position: Outside Hitter
Height: 6'0"
Club Team: Junior Heat
Schmidt: "
Sophie is a great fit for SFU both athletically and academically. As another multi-sport athlete, she brings a great all-around skill set to the court and demonstrates an incredible ability to perform in pressure situations. Sophie is not only a great volleyball player but an excellent student and teammate as well."
As an outside hitter who specializes on the right side, Sophie is an accomplished player who boasts a number of accomplishments. While playing for her high school team at Kelowna Secondary School, she won a gold medal at the AAAA Senior Girls Volleyball Provincial Championships in both 2018 and 2019. Sophie was also named a Provincial First-Team All-Star this past season in 2019. Her club team, the Junior Heat also proves to be a talented team as Sophie and eight other of her teammates will be moving on to play at the collegiate level.
Outside of volleyball, Sophie is a forward on her basketball team and also volunteers and lifeguards at
her local recreation center. The academically gifted athlete hopes to pursue a degree in sustainable energy engineering.
Why SFU? "SFU has a program that I'm very interested in, and I am really excited to play with the volleyball team and be coached by
Gina Schmidt."
Kohl Peters –
Surrey, BC / Pacific Academy / Ryerson University
Position: Middle
Height: 6'1"
Club Team: Fraser Valley Volleyball Club
Schmidt: "
We are happy to be welcoming Kohl back to her home province. Kohl brings a strong physical presence to the net and will help bolster the strong core of middle blockers we have in our program. Kohl is already familiar with several of our current players through previous Team BC experiences. This should allow Kohl to make a smooth transition into our program this fall."
Kohl Peters brings a year of collegiate experience to SFU along with her numerous achievements from her time in the B.C. volleyball circuit. During her time with FVVC, she won two Provincial Championships in 2016 and 2017, and most recently took home the silver medal in 2018 and 2019. She was also a member of Team B.C., and took home gold at the Canada Cup in 2018. In her grade twelve year as a part of the high school team at Pacific Academy along side teammate Davida Hill, she was a BC AA Provincial Champion and was named a First Team Provincial All-Star. In the fall, Kohl plans to continue her studies in Criminology at SFU.
Why SFU? "The incredible reputation of the coaching staff and girls on the SFU team were a huge draw for me. On top of that, being able to receive a great education from a school like SFU and study the program I wanted made a huge influence on my choice. I am so excited to get to be a part of the SFU community!"
