BELLINGHAM – Simon Fraser University battled nationally-ranked Western Washington for 70 minutes before conceding two late goals and the game Saturday afternoon in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Harrington Field.
SFU lost 2-0 to No. 23 ranked Western Washington to fall to 3-7-1 on the season, 4-4 in the GNAC. (SFU won a conference game by forfeit earlier this year that is recorded as a win in the conference standings).
SFU sits in fourth place in the GNAC standings.
WWU, which moved to 10-1-2 overall, 7-1-0 in conference play, increased its unbeaten streak at Harrington Field (29-0-3) to 32-games at the on-campus facility that debuted in 2014.
The Vikings scored both goals less than seven minutes apart. Tera Ziemer scored her fifth of the season with a left-footed finish from nine yards after a give-and-go just outside the box. Darby Doyle followed with her third of the season on a 27-yard free kick that slipped under SFU goalkeeper
Nicole Anderson.
The Viking came in waves at SFU for much of the game peppering Anderson with 10 shots in the first half and 16 shots in the second half. Anderson made eight saves.
SFU directed six shots towards the Viking net with Natalie Dierickx making two saves for the clean sheet.
WWU defeated SFU 2-1 in the GNAC opener for both teams on Sept. 23 in Burnaby, and after Saturday's win, leads the all-time series 32-17-3.
SFU has three home games remaining and two are coming this week. SFU is home in SFU Stadium for games on Thursday against Montana State Billings (5pm) and Saturday against Seattle Pacific (2pm).
