SFU moves closer to playoff spot after scoreless draw with NNU

NAMPA, ID – Simon Fraser University won an important point in its push for a place in the four-team Great Northwest Athletic Conference post-season championship tournament, playing higher seeded Northwest Nazarene to a scoreless draw Saturday afternoon on the road.

The single point earned puts fourth-place SFU two points up on Western Oregon and Montana State Billing in conference standing, with two games remaining. SFU controls its own fate with a road game at Saint Martin's on Nov. 4 and a home game against Western Oregon on Senior's Day at SFU Stadium.

WOU is home to conference No. 2 Western Washington before facing SFU. MSUB is on the road for games against NNU and Central Washington.

"I'm proud of the fight and resilience we showed today and now we can turn our attention to finishing the season strong and securing a place in the GNAC tournament," said head coach Annie Hamel. "We've done enough to be in charge of our own fate. If we win, we keep our season going without relying on any other results."

These next two games are massive for SFU, trying to earn its way into the post-season for the first time since 2018 and for the third time in Hamel's eight-year run as head coach.

"This is a young group, but their strong and inspired," added Hamel. "They love each other and want to keep playing for as long as we can!"

It was a solid bounce back performance from Thursday's 2-0 road loss for SFU on a really tough road trip. Neither team was able to score over the 110 minutes of regulation and two overtimes Saturday afternoon.

NNU outshot SFU 21-9, but SFU keeper Kelsey Fisher came up with 10 saves on all 10 shots she faced. NNU held a 55-45 advantage in possession over SFU, with 61% of their possession in the attacking half.

The Nighthawks held SFU to just three shots on goal, with Alexis Montoya saving all three.

With the draw, NNU moves to 9-3-3 on the season and 7-3-2 in GNAC play. Seattle Pacific and WWU have clinched post-season berths in the GNAC Championship, Nov. 11-13 at Harrington Field in Bellingham, Wash.

SFU's Senior Day is Saturday, Nov. 6 at noon in SFU Stadium. The team will honour Emma Lobo, Danae Robillard, Kayla Goncalves, Gabrielle Brissette and Paige Gingras.
