Kiara Buono scores highlight-reel goal, but SFU women’s soccer falls 2-1

BURNABY, B.C. -- The Simon Fraser women's soccer team scored another outstanding goal, but it wasn't enough as host Montana State-Billings earned a 2-1 overtime win in their Great Northwest Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Sydney Torres got the golden goal in the 93rd minute. SFU trailed 1-0 at the half before Kiara Buono's 54th-minute tally evened the scoreline.

Buono stunned MSUB with her first marker of the year. She received a pass on the left side of the field, halfway between the centre line and the penalty area. The sophomore from Coquitlam, B.C., made a turn and dribbled to her right. When she created just a bit of space, Buono fired a perfect shot. She sent the ball over the outstretched hands of 6-foot-3 goalkeeper Tuva Sallvin but kept it low enough to catch the underside of the crossbar and down.

Buono's feat adds to SFU's list of impressive goals in 2021, which includes two directly from corner kicks, Giuliana Zaurrini's opener from 25 yards out against Saint Martin's, and Mackenzie Almeida's game winner against Central Washington, which was a rocket from outside the penalty area.

SFU worked for the winning goal late. With about 10 minutes to go, Zaurrini sent a cross to the front of the net for Annika Gross. She got a foot on the ball at the same time as an MSUB defender contacted her from behind. Both ended up on the ground, but play continued.

That set the stage for Torres, who also went bar down on her goal.

A corner kick by the Yellowjackets was partially cleared and Jordan Roe got control of the ball for the home side. Torres was standing at the top of the penalty area in the middle of the field, took a short bouncing pass from Roe and volleyed it off the crossbar.

Ally Findlay opened the scoring early, converting in the sixth minute from the top of the six-yard box. After an MSUB corner kick, she was able to kick a bouncing ball towards the goal. The ball deflected off an SFU defender and into the net.

MSUB fired 18 shots towards SFU goalkeeper Kelsey Fisher, with eight on target. Fisher made six saves on the day. Five of Simon Fraser's six shots were on net. The hosts also held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks with two of them eventually leading to Yellowjackets goals.

Emily Smith, Jenieva Musico, and Katie Richardson all played the full 93 minutes on the back line, as did Buono and Danae Robillard in the midfield.

SFU falls to 2-6-1 overall and 3-3 in GNAC contests. The team's conference record includes a forfeit by Northwest Nazarene (Idaho) that is not counted in the team's overall mark. The team sits just ahead of MSUB (5-4-2, 2-3-1 GNAC) in the league standings.

SFU is back on the road next week, with games at Western Oregon (Thursday) and Western Washington (Saturday).
