Freshman opposite-side hitter
Brooke Dexter, who led SFU to four straight wins at the Point Loma Seasider Invitational in San Diego over the weekend, was today named American Volleyball Coaches Association National Player of the Week.
Dexter
was named AVCA Player of the Week, and Great Northwest Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, after she led SFU to a 4-0 record at the Seaside Invitational, which included a four-set upset over then-No. 3 ranked Cal State San Bernardino on Friday. Dexter led the way in that win with 24 kills, nine digs and two blocks. She also had a 20-kill performance in a five-set win over Cal State LA later that day. For the week, Dexter averaged 4.62 kills and 2.88 digs per set.
Simon Fraser is off to its best start in two decades and this week moved to No. 24 in the national rankings. In the past 20 years, SFU has only won its first four games once, in 2014, against mostly Canadian colleges. Records during SFU's NAIA years are not available.
Dexter led all GNAC players with 4.62 K/S and averaged 2.88 digs and 0.44 blocks on the week. She had a 24-kill, 9-dig effort in the 3-1 win over No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino and she added 20 and 17 kills in wins over Cal State LA and Point Loma.
The Seasider tournament were the first matches for Simon Fraser since November 2019, because the team could not cross the U.S./Canada border to compete.
In 2016, SFU won its first two matches, lost, then peeled off eight straight wins to start the season 10-1. This year's team is certainly eyeing that standard later this week when it faces Biola University (Sept. 10), St Cloud State and Hawaii Pacific (Sept. 11). The 2016 team went to the NCAA tournament.
