BURNABY, B.C. -- The Simon Fraser women's basketball team lost 86-74 to host Saint Martin's (Wash.) Saturday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference battle in Lacey, Washington.
The dynamic duo of
Jessica Wisotzki (21) and
Jessica Jones (19) combined for 40 points for SFU (6-10, 2-5 GNAC), but the visitors were upended by a big Saints' second-half comeback. Jones, a senior guard, also pulled in a team-best eight rebounds.Â
Junior guard
Emma Kramer chipped in with eight points, while junior guard/forward
Sophie Klassen recorded seven points and five assists (tied for most of any SFU player Saturday). Junior guard
Georgia Swant also had five assists, as well as five rebounds and six points.Â
Tierney DeDonatis had 29 points for the home side, while Claire Dingus posted a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double.Â
SFU led 41-26 at the half, recording 13 assists on 16 field goals.
A Saint Martin's foul shot with 2:47 to go in the first quarter tied the score at 11. Seconds later, Jones made a three-point basket to start a period-ending 13-2 run. She added a couple of free throws before
Jessica Wisotzki hit a triple. SFU then got layups from freshman forward
Gemma Cutler and Klassen, who added a foul shot after her score to round out the offence at 24-13.
The team's defence was strong during the run, holding Saint Martin's (10-6, 2-5 GNAC) to 1-for-6 shooting from the field, while Cutler blocked two shots.Â
SFU built on its lead in the second quarter with
Jessica Wisotzki playing a big role. Her team was leading 26-17 with about seven and a half minutes before halftime. The elder Wisotzki then scored SFU's next 10 points, alternating between two-point jump shots, and three-point ones. Her left-wing triple with 3:15 on the clock made it 36-22.
Kramer's left-sideline three in the final minute gave SFU its largest advantage of the day, 15 points, for the first time at 39-24. The squads traded baskets before the mid-game break.
