BLAINE, Wash. – SFU was shutout 24-0 by the No. 2-ranked Angelo State football team on Saturday night before 400 fans at Blaine High School Stadium.
The Rams improve to 9-0 overall on the season and 7-0 in Lone Star Conference while the Red Leafs remain winless.
Angelo State led 14-0 after the first quarter, 17-0 at the half and 24-0 after three. There was no scoring in the fourth quarter.
SFU nearly got on the scoreboard towards the end of the second quarter, attempting a field goal before it was blocked by Kason McCullough-Cooper who kept the Red Leafs scoreless.
"The guys are doing the best they can and we just have to find a way to overcome obstacles, overcome the challenges and get in the win column," said head coach
Mike Rigell. "When you lose to the second-best team in Division II, and play well on defence, well, you just have to keep working at it and working hard and fix a few things. We just have to lock in and get better."
SFU blocked two punts in the game and its defence played their hearts out to keep the score close on a night when the Red Leafs offence never got on track.
The Rams tallied 428 yards of total offence, 238 rushing yards and 190 passing.
Special teams played a large role in the game. SFU blocked two punts in the game.
Joshua Phillips Verdugo blocked a punt in the second quarter that
Johari Hastings recovered and
Riley Berfelo blocked another in the fourth quarter.
Dayton Ingenhaag was the leading tackler for the Red Leafs with 16 (eight solo and eight assisted) on the night, followed by
Gideone Kremler with nine (four solo).
Evan Currie,
Tank Brewster and
Ryan Barthelson had eight total tackles each. Brewster also added a nine-yard sack, and three tackles for loss.
Jeremiah Famor had six tackles (1.5 for loss) and a sack.
The Rams faked out the Red Leafs for the first score of the game, running a fake field goal as Cade Fuller took the hold for nine yards to the end zone for a touchdown.
"We don't really have any stars on our team, everyone just has to figure out what they have to do to help us win," said Rigell. "We just are not quite there. Guys know their roles, they are digging in, and our kids haven't quit. They are still hungry for that win."
SFU is on the road next weekend for a game against Western Oregon (4-5 overall, 3-4 LSC) on Saturday, Nov. 5. beginning at 1 p.m.
