BURNABY, B.C. – Simon Fraser junior Maka Yacapin went undefeated in his three matches Saturday to lead the Red Leafs men's wrestling team at the Cactus Duals Saturday in Phoenix, Arizona.

Against the No. 20 Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks, he won his match by forfeit. He pinned Zach Wright of San Francisco State 3:40 in their bout, and earned a 6-1 decision over Colorado State Pueblo's Dominick Castro. The wrestler from Seattle earned 15 points for his team.

In its three duals, SFU fell 36-9 to MSU Mankato, 26-18 to the SFSU Gators, and 33-12 to the Thunderwolves of CSU Pueblo

Heavyweight Taniela Feliciano-Takafua (Sunnyvale, California) won two of his three matches. He beat Max Villnow 8-1 to score three team points against Minnesota State Mankato, and then earned a 7-1 sudden-victory result over Emilio Franco Sandoval of SFSU for another three points.
 

Senior Randy McDonald of Newman Lake, Washington, got the Red Leafs a full six points after pinning Sean Yamasaki of the Gators (6:09) in their 141-pound bout. At 197 pounds, sophomore Owen Gudmundson (Calgary) scored a 3-2 decision over Laith Gilmore for three team points. In an extra match that didn't contribute to the dual result, senior Jacob Alexander-Torres of Mississauga, Ont., won a major decision 11-3 against Andre Dargani.

Vancouver sophomore Marques Calapiz pinned Marquis Kemp of the Thunderwolves (4:21) to triumph at 133 pounds, while sophomore Patrik Leder (Mississauga, Ont.) outscored Elijah Valdez 3-2 to win their 165-pound match.

The Red Leafs will return to competition in the new year at Western Colorado University's Tracy Borah Duals on January 7, 2023.
