BURNABY, B.C. – For the second time in four days, the Simon Fraser women's basketball team won a high-scoring Great Northwest Athletic Conference game over the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks.
Â
After a 96-86 victory Saturday in Nampa, Idaho, SFU (10-11, 6-6 GNAC) earned the season-series sweep with a 90-79 triumph Tuesday at the West Gym with
Jessica Jones leading the way.
Â
The senior guard recorded 22 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals. Sophomore guard/forward
Jessica Wisotzki scored 17 points, while freshman forward
Gemma Cutler had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard
Georgia Swant handed out seven assists and got four steals.
Â
"One of our goals is to get 20 points a quarter, and we had 20 in all four quarters tonight," said SFU head coach
Bruce Langford. "I thought we saw some adversity in terms of mistakes, and a couple of people weren't really having a great day, but we overcame that adversity and handled it very well down the stretch. We got 23 assists, six with (Jessica) Jones, and seven with Georgia (Swant), which is outstanding. Gemma (Cutler) was very good on the boards with a double double. Some tough battles inside. She's come a long way as a rookie and is getting better every day. Jones hit some big baskets at various times during the game, with her normal six assists and five boards so that was sweet."

Teagan Thurman came off the bench to lead the Nighthawks (13-8, 7-6 GNAC) with 26 points. Her basket halfway through the final quarter tied the score at 74-74, but Wisotzki converted a layup on the next possession to start a game-ending 16-5 SFU run.
Â
With less than three minutes remaining, Wisotzki made a sideline three-point shot in front of her own bench to put SFU up 83-77. Then a Jones steal eventually turned into a Cutler layup before Wisotzki hit a pair of foul shots to extend the home team's lead to 87-77. SFU scored three more free throws to round out the offensive output.
NNU fought back from a 12-point, 53-41 deficit in the third quarter to tie the game, thanks in part to a 10-1 run in the middle of the period. Lydia Nieto's triple with just over four minutes on the clock closed the margin to just 59-57, before three SFU buckets – from Jones, junior forward
Sophie Klassen and sophomore guard
Grace Killins – put the gap back up to 65-57.
Â
Jones got the first basket of the fourth quarter to restore the eight-point edge, 72-64. Thurman then provided eight points in the 10-2 NNU run that evened the score.
Â
SFU outscored the Nighthawks 28-18 in the opening quarter, with Jones contributing 10 points.
Â
SFU went up by 11 early in the second but an Emma Clark fast-break layup cut the advantage to 39-37 with 2:14 left. The hosts, though, posted a 9-2 surge to close out the half, with junior guard
Emma Kramer hitting a three just before the buzzer. The score at the break was 48-39 for SFU.
Â
Canada's NCAA team shot 44.9 per cent from the field, making 31 of 69 shots, including 6 of 19 from long distance (31.6 per cent). For the second outing in a row, SFU earned at least 30 trips to the foul line. On Tuesday, the squad made 73.3 per cent of its free throws (22 of 30).
Â
The Nighthawks converted 26 of 68 shots from the field (38.2 per cent), 4 of 19 from behind the three-point line (21.1 per cent) and 23 of 30 at the free-throw line (76.7 per cent).
SFU has two more home games this week, Thursday against Alaska Anchorage and Saturday versus Alaska. Tipoff both nights is scheduled for 7 p.m.
