SAN MARCOS, Calif. – SFU Softball suffered a lopsided loss than a crushing defeat all in one afternoon when it lost 24-8 and 6-5 to California State University at San Marcos Tuesday afternoon in California.
The two losses dropped SFU's overall record to 3-4. The Cougars have recorded 11 consecutive wins and are off to their best start since moving to NCAA Division II in 2016. They are 12-1 this season.
SFU has a single contest against San Marcos on Wednesday (noon) before returning home for its home-opening double header at Beedie Field on Saturday beginning at noon. SFU will also play Sunday against Saint Martin's at Beedie Field.
The opening game Tuesday against the Cougars got away early when San Marcos scored five runs in the second inning, eight in the third and added another 11 runs in the fourth inning. The game was called after five innings.
SFU actually led early when designated player
Caitlin Zagari homered to left field,her first of the season, a two-run blast that scored
Georgia Ogg in the top of the second. Zagari added a double later in the game.
SFU managed eight hits in Game 1 and five extra base hits, two from Zagari, an RBI triple by
Hannah Beram, and doubles by
Chelsea Hotner and
Rebecca Kirkpatrick.
SFU scored two runsin the second and three in the third, but was trailing 13-5 after three innings. SFU added one run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth.
In the second game, SFU jumped out to a 5-0 lead, scoring three runs in the first and two in the second. The lead held until the fifth when the Cougars ripped off six hits and scored five runs. Pinch hitter Mackenzie Kestler ended the game with one swing of the bat, hitting a two-out, 3-2 pitch over the right field fence.
SFU had nine hits in the second game but left 11 runners on base.
Julia Hansen started the contest and pitched five inning giving up seven hits and five runs while striking out five.
Anissa Zacharczuk pitched the final two innings, giving up the homer by Kestler. Zacharczuk was tagged with the loss and falls to 3-3 on the season. Zacharczuk gave up eight hits and eight runs before leaving in the third inning of the first game.
In Game 2, SFU scored three runs on two hits in the first inning when it jumped out to the 3-0 lead. Kirkpatrick singled to second with the bases loaded, scoring two runners.
Hannah Boulanger scored from third on an error by the catcher in the first.
In the second inning, SFU scored two runs on three hits. With runners on second and third, Hotner doubled to centre field to score both runners. She finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. Kirkpatrick also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4.
