SFU softball drops non-conference game, second contest halted

BURNABY, B.C. – Simon Fraser and Saint Martin's (Wash.) needed nine innings to settle the first of two neutral-site, non-conference games Sunday in Ellensburg, Washington. With two runs in the top of the ninth, the Saints outlasted SFU 12-10. The second contest of the day was halted in the third inning because of darkness.

SFU began the back and forth opener with five first-inning runs.

Junior shortstop Hannah Boulanger drove in two with a double to center field. The next batter, sophomore Rebecca Kirkpatrick, who played second base, hit an infield single to the shortstop to bring home another run. Freshman right fielder Janique Balcaen then sent a two-RBI double to right center for SFU's fourth and fifth runs.

SMU, however, answered back with five of its own in the second. The Saints took the lead with a score in the top of the fourth.

SFU went back in front 7-6 on junior Hanna Finkelstein's third home run of the season. Her smash down the left field line also scored junior Alex Ogg, who put her team up 9-7 in the fifth with a two-RBI single up the middle.

Saint Martin's plated three runs in the sixth to go ahead 10-9.

Alex Ogg sent the game to extra innings with an RBI to center field that tied the score at 10-10. It was her third hit and run batted in on Sunday.

Destiny Conerly's two-run home run in the top of the ninth gave her SMU (3-5) squad the triumph.

Balcaen, Boulanger, sophomore catcher Georgia Ogg, and freshman designated player Caitlin Zagari had two hits each for SFU.

This weekend's action, which also featured two victories against host Central Washington Saturday, was originally scheduled for Beedie Field in Burnaby, but was moved to Ellensburg because of unplayable weather-related conditions.

SFU (5-6) will open Great Northwest Athletic Conference action next weekend with doubleheaders March 5-6 at Montana State Billings.

The team's first home games will be March 12-13 on Beedie Field against the Western Oregon Wolves.
